NORTHWEST CHILD RESCUE
WOMEN, a group of 50 Jewish
women striving to raise the re-
mainder of a $10,000 pledge for
the construction of a home in
the Children's Village at Raana-
na Israel, held a rummage sale,
and produced an incident that
was to strike the heart of every
member • . . An elderly gentle-
man purchased a second-hand
coat for $4, and a few days later
took it into a cleaning establish-
ment owned by Joe Gordon, hus-
band of one of the women who
participated in the rummage
sale ... Recognizing Mary Gor-
don as the woman from whom
1 he had bought the coat, he took
out $2 and told her to add it to
the group's treasury fund . . .
explaining that he had found
the money in the pockets of the
coat when he arrived home .. .
The members of Northwest
Clinic Rescue Women received
an even greater sensation when
the kind elderly gent returned
to the cleaning establishment
and handed Mrs. Gordon a $5
bill "for the orphaned children"
. . • with the explanation that
his niece had passed away and
left him a small bit of money
. He said the wanted to help
as much as he could . . . even
though he was a non-Jew.

LEON COUSENS, whose wife,
Fran, receives her master's de-
gree in sociology this month at
Wayne,. vows that he is through
"working my Wife's way through
college" . . . Since their mar-
riage, in addition to caring for
their three children and in be-
tween her household duties,
Fran has acquired two univer-
sity degrees . . and something
of a fabulous reputation as a
cook . . Leon insists that his
most comforting thought is that
Wayne doesn't award doctorates
in Fran's field . . . and that if
it did, "Fran would be on her
own from here on in!"

BEN SLLBERSTEIN delivers
bagels every Sunday morning for
breakfast to the homes of his
friends, Leonard Simons, Bill
Gershenson, Manny Harris, Uey
Arnfeld and Larry Michelson ...
The group wanted to show their
appreciation and presented
Benny with a watch inscribed,
"To Benny The Bagel Boy" . .
The Bagel Club was formed on
the spot at Silberstein's . • .
What did Benny serve? . .
Bagels, of course!

A REMARKABLE MAN is
Moses B. Cohen who, at 85,
found life all over again . . .
That was when he retired from
his engraving shop, eight years
ago, to attend art school
Today, Cohen is still busy at his
oil paintings at the age of 93
. . . and getting seemingly
younger each day ... Among his
paintings are that of actor Paul
Muni, and his own various con-
ceptions of what Spinosa, the
famous 16th Century philoso-
pher, would have looked like ...
His greeting card painting of
Isaiah's Visions of Peace may
soon be issued nationally . . .
Father . of five children, Cohen
also is grandpop to five others
and great-grandfather to an-
other four . . . Three Of his chil-
dren live in Detroit . . . Barrister
Hairy Cohen, Mrs. Clarence Got-
tesman and Hattie Cohen ... He
is the uncle of Ben Shahn,
famous artist who painted the
murals at Rockefeller Center in
New York .. . having taught him
art work through lithography
when Shahn was 15 years old
... and Cohen was an engraver
... He is an avid reader, Shake-

spearean scholar and writer of
treatises on philosophy . • Long
before he ever took up painting,
or even thought of it, Cohen was
the first person in the country
to discover an engraving process
for the transfer of the grain
effect of wood onto panels of
many various creations . . . He
looks like "only" 75 years old
and boasts of a good clean very
full life .
At 93, Moses B. Co-

and like old man river, keeps
right on rolling along ... paint-
ing pictures while other men his
age spend their time looking
back ... and just waiting.

INFANT'S SERVICE GROUP'S
annual dinner-dance and show.
last Sunday, was so great a
success that even Gov. G. Men-
nen Williams learned new words
in Yiddish ... Dee Parker proved
the grand trouper that she is
and maintained the adage that
"The show Must go on" when
she sang numerous songs for
dancing . . . while hubby, Phil
Brestoff was in Texas where he
was called by his brother's death
. . . About the show, there is no
wonder Infants Service Group
always packs them in every year
. .. The women presented prob-
ably the finest amateur produc
tion that could be seen locally
... Much credit must go to these
women and to their director,
Eleanor Riseman.

Mrs. Milton
Winston, in
charge of the
program, an-
nounces that
the choral group
of Bnai
