Business

Is Business

I was deeply shocked when I saw in the January issue of the
Julius Klein Newsletter an article by Merwin K. Hart, notorious
president of the National Economic Council.
Hart needs no introduction to Jewish audiences. His anti-
Jewish pen has been as sharp as the sword and dagger of the cru-
der anti-Semites and perhaps more effective. He is a smooth and
clever operator. One of his sharpest and perhaps best-timed blast
was delivered during the good-will Christmas season of 1949 when
he made a violent attack on pro-Israel Jews. In February of 1949,
when debate was hot on the admission to the U. S. of the Nazi
pianist Walter Gieseking, Hart charged that "Jewish-communist
influence dictated this high-handed procedure," referring to the
pianist's exclusion by the State Department. Hart, of course. had
no moral scruples about the admission of an admitted Hitlerite to
the country and to him it was "clear this influence over-ruled
agencies of the Government of the United States." This pro-
Franco apologist, we remember, was so enamoured of Elizabeth
Dilling that he recommended reading of books penned by that
Jew-hater. Nor have we forgotten his baiting of "alien elements,"
with Jewish names dotting his list.
Yet this leading anti-Semitic propagandist has found his way
into Julius Klein's Newsletter. True he writes on economics, but it
seems the former national commander of the Jewish War Veterans
of the United States and present member of its executive should
have known better than to give his pages to an outspoken anti-
Semite, particularly since his organization, a member of NCRAC
has been designated by Prof. MacIver in his report as a competent
agency in handling Jewish defense problems on the veterans level.
Julius Klein, by publishing the Hart article he committed—to
say the least—one of the worst public relations blunders.

Scholarly Dissention

A sharp rift has developed within the administration of the
Hebrew University in Jerusalem. According to London sources
Prof. Selig Brodetsky, university president, has tendered his resig-
nation. I learn that one of the top officials of the American
Friends of the Hebrew University is to fly to Israel at once with
a view to adjusting the differences and influencing Prof. Brodet-
sky to remain in his post at least for a time. In the meantime
rumors were circulating that Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver is a strong
candidate for the post in the event of a vacancy. Others men-
tioned are Eliahu Elath, Israel's Minister to London, Dr. Israel
Goldstein, and an unnamed American educator, believed to be
Prof. Katsch of New York University.

MIAMI, (7, TA)—Hymie Jacob-
son, 57, well-known Yiddish ac-
tor and playwright, died here of
a stroke. Born in Chicago, of a
family long identified with the
Yiddish stage, he wrote musicals
for the Yiddish theater, many of
which were very popular. Two
years ago he wrote the play,
music and lyrics for "Catskill
Honeymoon," an American movie
in Yiddish.
