The 300th anniversary of the settlement' of Jews in the United States Will be marked by a nationwide celebration in 1954 and 1955, it was announced by Ralph E. Samuel, chairman of the committee on organization for the celebration. Initiated by the American Jewish Historical Society and the American Jew- ish Committee, the celebration is expected to have as its basic theme the American heritage of religious and civil liberty. "Nearly three centuries have elapsed since September 1654, when the first Jews arrived in New Amsterdam in search of re- ligious freedom," Mr. Samuel said. A physician by profession, Dr. Weis( was a gunner . in the. Austrian forces during World War I. His military training of those years stood him in good service during the Jewish war of libera- tion, when he was in command of Israeli artillery, first in the Tel Aviv area and later in the Negev, where he outmaneuvered and defeated superior Egyptian armored forces. Wounded in the conquest of Beersheba, he retired from active service. A Zionist since early youth, he emigrated to Palestine in 1922 shortly after receiving his medical degree at the University of Vienna. Propelled toward political activity and journalism while at the same time devoting himself to his profession, Dr. Weis( accepted the post as Eastern correspondent of the Ullstein Service. He was the first newspaper man to have secured an interview with King Ibn Saud and the last one to have been received by King Hussein of the Hadjaz. He was once imprisoned by the Shah Riza of Persia, who suspected him of being another Colonel Lawrence in disguise. One of his memorable feats was crossing of the Red Sea in a two-ton sailing boat. In order to study the philosophy of the modern Hindus, he wandered through the Himalayas as a Brahman monk. With the arrival of Hitler, Dr. Weis( abandoned all his inter- ests and concentrated on the political fight for the sur- vival of European Jewry. He therefore tried to convince the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe that their only hope for survival lay in immediate emigration to. Palestine. Between 1932 and 1939 he delivered over 1,000 lectures and wrote more than 600 articles, with Jewish survival as the theme. In 1940 he returned to Palestine where he built a private hospital. - In 1946 he was among a group of Jewish leaders arrested by the British because of their connection with the underground. He was arrested again by the British in 1947, but was liberated, You saw it work miracles on Leader Will Perform This Miracle RIGHT ON YOUR FLOOR The Jewish News $ 4 The Jewish News NEW 1952 PLYMOUTH LOUIS T CO.o TV KARPETKARE ri) 11C.L71, a B!GF LOW Bigelow's New On-Location Carpet Cleaner • takes only one day •retards resoiling •properly applied, will not shrink • leaves no unpleasant odor T hink how convenient it is to have your carpet cleaned right at home—cleaned thoroughly in just one day!
