Miami Terrorists Defy Police;
Detroit Council Urges Action

Miami terrorists, who are believed to be confident of
their immunity from police action in Miami, this week re-
newed their threats to Jewish and Negro public buildings.
A Catholic church also was in danger of being blown tip
when a stick of dynamite was found on its steps.
The murder of Harry T. Moore, executive secretary
of the Florida State Conference of the National Associa-
tion for the Advancement of Colored People, has shocked
the conscience of all liberal-minded Americans. The Jew-
ish Community Council of Detroit, in a telegram to U. S.
Attorney General Howard McGrath, has asked' for im-
mediate action to put an 'end to terrorists. (Detailed
story on page 2.)

PROCLAMATION

HISTADRUT WEEK

A Jewish Telegraphic Agency report from Miami states that
prior to the attempted church bombing a police official was no-
tified by telephone that a church would be attacked. Prior to the
setting off of a blast in Coral Gables, Public Safety Director
William G. Kimbrouh received a telephone warning and a grim
promise that more bombings would follow. "We've got plenty of
dynamite left," he was informed by telephone. "We have no pref-
erence as to what kind of church it is. We intend to go on bomb-
ing churches."

The Histadrut, the general federation of Jewish workers, is
the most comprehensive voluntary association of citizens in
Israel and has the objectives of co-operation, upholding the
dignity of labor, pioneering effort, cultural achievement *
mutual aid, democracy and a sense of national discipline.

Rewards for the arrest and conviction of the terrorists
reached a total of $19,000 as Gov. Fullen Warren posted $6,000
in additional reward money.
Representatives of the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, the Jewish Labor Committee and other organizations
arrived here to investigate the situation as civic and labor
organizations joined in demands for action by the authorities.

The work of the Histadrut and the building and development
of the State of Israel have been a great source of pride to
the citizens of Israel, as well as those people elsewhere in
the world who have faithfully and ardously labored in its
behalf. Its achievements in providing vocational training,
jobs, much needed health services, housing, and cultural
activities for new immigrants stand as a testimony to the
efficacy of democratic techniques.

In the United States, the Histadrut Campaign assists Histadrut
in all its constructive endeavors, and the Israel Histadrut
Campaign in the City of Detroit has undertaken to raise a
Minimum of *300,000 in a drive to support this great federation.

THEREFORE, I, G. Mennen Williams, Governor of the State of
Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week beginning Sunday, Januar
6, 1952 as

HISTADRUT WEEK

in Michigan, and I urge all good citizens of the State to give
generous and wholehearted support to the Histadrut Campaign.

Given under my hand and the
Great Seal of the State of
Michigan, this seventeenth day
of December, in the year of our
Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred
'Fifty-one, and of the Common-
wealth the One Hundred Fifteenth

The American Jewish Congress called on Attorney Gen. J.
Howard McGrath to make the fullest possible use of l'rezig.ra1 ma -
chinery to apprehend the terrorists. The Americans for Ver ii0 7- -
ratic Action call,ed on the Federal and State Governments to
c
act. The CIO Committee to Abolish Discrimination called for Fed-
eral and State intervention and urged Congress to strengthen
civil rights legislation. The National Association for the Advance-
ment of Colored People, the American Civil Liberties Union and
the American Veterans Committee joined the call for action.
The City of Miami, meanwhile, took one move as a result
of the bombings. The city council enacted legislation calling for
the licensing of dynamite except in marked vehicles.
The Americans for Democratic Action urged federal and
state governments to take immediate action to apprehend those
responsible for- "terroristic" intolerance in Florida. ADA chairman
Francis Biddle, former U. S. Attorney General, said the bomb
killing of Harry T. Moore, Florida leader of the National Associ-
ation for the Advancement of Colored People, was a "shocking
demonstration of violence" directed "at racial and religious mi-
norities" in Florida.
Demands were also made by CIO secretary, James B. Carey,
who heads the organization's Committee to Abolish discrimina-
tion. Telegrams were sent to President Truman, Gov. Fuller War-
ren of Florida: and to the Democratic and Republican leaders in
Congress.

Governor 'Proclaims illistadrutt Week":

Governor
G. Mennen Williams officially proclaimed Jan. 6-13 as "Histadrut Week" in Michigan on
the occasion of Detroit's $300,000 campaign for Israel Histadrut which will be launched
Sunday evening at a rally at Temple Israel. Details of the drive are given in a special sec-
tion in this issue on Pages 11 to 14. The Histadrut campaign's national office in New York
has issued an appeal for an emergency fund of $250,000 to help Israel's flood victims. A
telegraphic appeal addressed by national officers to Morris Lieberman, Harry Schumer,
Morris L. Schaver. and Chaim Gottlieb, Israel Histadrut campaign officers here, at 13722
Linwood, states: "We have received this appeal from Israel: 'Heavy rainstorms struck
scores of Maabarot in the Galilee, the Negev and the Jerusalem Corridor, jeopardizing the
welfare- of - thousands of immigrants. Histadrut has mobilized all its resources, including
its personnel, institutions and public buildings, to aid the sufferers and to provide them with
food and other necessities. We appeal to our friends in America to make an extraordinary
effort to transmit immediately all available cash to meet the pressing demands. We trans-
mitted immediately $150,000. However, much more money is urgently required to cope
with the present_ emergency situation and we appeal to you to mobilize maximum contri-
butions and cash advances and to forward them to our office as speedily as possible:."

'Holiness in Time':

The National Sabbath

observance project sponsored by the • United Synagogue of
America has been elevated to high stature by Prof. Abraham
. Joshua Heschel, who describes the day of rest as "Holiness
in Time," in his inspiring new hook, "The Sabbath: It's
Meaning for Modern Man." Published by Farrar, Straus and
Young, this edifying work is illustrated by Ilya Schor. The
above reproduction of a Schor drawing illustrates the Biblical
precept: "Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep It Holy."
A review of Prof Ueschel's "The Sabbath" appears in this .
