on the American Jewish com-
munity, and the future of this
community trembles in the bal-
ance of Jewish education."
He called for the emergence
of a new generation of leaders
of Jewish education to follow
the example of Bernard Semel,
asserting that almost all Jewish
community leaders have been
giving first place to overseas
needs and "relegating Jewish
education into the background,
treating it as a stepchild and
assigning it to an inferior place
in the scale of Jewish values
and needs."
Pointing out that the Jewish
school in America "is detached
and removed from the Jewish
home and the American school
and street," that it has "tried
desperately to force down the
throats of the children 'a mode
of living their parents had
abandoned," because of a "fear
of assimilation and a longing
for atonement," Dr. Goldman
stated that "Jewish education
must learn to bind Americanism
and Judaism into a coherent
entity and a sense of compelling
unity."
