NEW YORK, (JTA) — Jewish scholars will play a prominent role in the publication of a pro- jected six-volume 3,000,000-Word "History of Mankind" in which a thousand scholars will partici- pate. Among the corresponding members of the Commission are: Prof. Shimon Bodenheimer, zoo- logist and historian of science of Hebrew University Prof C. Levi- Strauss, anthropologist and lin guist of the Sorbonne University, Paris, Dr. Charles Singer of Lon- don, historian of medicine tech- nology. Dr. Louis Gottschalk, professor of European history at the University of Chicago, was named to write Voluthe IV of the series covering the period from A.D. 1300 to the opening of the nineteenth century. J., (JTA) — The strike of members of the Social Service Employees Union, Local 11, against the Jewish Commun- ity Council of Essex County and a number of agencies affiliated with the Council is entering its fourth week with the Council re- fusing to negotiate a new con- tract with the union because of its "Communist leadership." Only about 60 of the 145 mem- bers of the union are on strike, a Council spokesman said. The strike began on Dec. 6 after the Council notified the union that when the present contract ex- pires on December 31, it would negotiate only with a union "without a Communist reputa- tion." Seven agencies of the Council independently re - af- firmed the Council's stand. Allan' V. Lowenstein, Council president, has charged that the strike has been marked by a campaign of "villification, vio- lence and harassment, including jamming of the agency's tele- phones and threats of employees and officials." Two arrests have been made on charges of vio- lence.
