THE JEWISH NEWS-3 Friday, December 88s, 1951 Corn munity Honors Late Fred Butzel At JWF Dedication Members of the Detroit com- munity-those who knew Fred Butzel best-will be on the pro- gram when the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Association and the Jewish Welfare Federation dedi- cate the downtown building purchased as a permanent me- morial to this Jewish commun- ity's greatest citizen. The build- ing, located at 163 Madison at John R, will be formally dedi- cated at 8 p.m., Jan. 13. At 8 p.m., Jan. 14, a memorial concert, featuring the Jewish Community Center orchestra, directed by Julius Chajes, will be presented. Judge William Friedman will be chairman, and soloist will be Wyn Garden, so- prano. Chairman for the formal dedi- cation is Abraham Srere, also chairman of the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Association. Other major speakers include William J, Norton, executive vice-presi- dent of the Children's Fund of Michigan, long associated with Butzel in community social serv- ice activities, and Judge Theo- dore Levin, who was selected to fill the posts of president of Resettlement Service and United Jewish Charities left vacant at the time of Butzel's death in 1948. Rabbi A. M. Hershman, rabbi emeritus, of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, will give the invocation. Samuel H. Rubiner, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, will discuss the Butzel Memorial Award for distinguished com- munal service, presented for the first time this year to Julian H. Krolik, chairman of the Federa- tion executive committee. Mrs. Joseph H. Ehrlich will bring a message from Jewish women of Detroit and other mes- sages will be given by Isidore Sobeloff, executive director of Federation, and Mayor Albert E. Cobo. Mrs. Ehrlich, Mrs. Ben L. Sil- berstein and Mrs. Henry Wine- man serve as co-chairmen of a reception committee for the dedication, who will guide people on a tour of the building. One of the highlights of the program will be the unveiling of a _ portrait especially commis- sioned for the building-now being done by Roy C. Gamble, who was the artist for the por- trait of Fred Butzel's brother, Henry M., Michigan State Su- preme Court Justice. 'Coming here from Russia in 1926, Rabbi Rabinowitz assumed duties as spiritual leader of Cong. Agudath Achim, and later at Cong. Bnai Zion. He learned that a great number of lands- leit of his father and his grand- father from Bresner were in De- troit. Together, in 1930 they formed Cong. Beth, Shmuel named in honor of the Rabbi's grandfather. Rabbi Rabinowitz was instru- mental in building the member- ship of the congregation from 60 members at the time of its in- ception to its present number of 250 worshippers.
