an Blitstein and Paul Carpenter

HARRY POTOCSKY, genial
D.S.R. bus driver on the Linwood
line, returned home from his
trip west with the revelation
that Detroit transportation is
considered the finest in the
country . . Harry was one of
the delegates elected by D.S.R.
employees to attend the national
convention on transportation
. . . and is back prouder than
ever of the men with whom he
works and the system of trans-
portation applied here.

ANNUALLY, AT THIS time
of year, the Jewish War Vets
conduct their "Give a gift to
a Yank who gave" campaign
. designed to get money and
articles for -holiday gifts for
those vets who are in hospitals
. . . Eddie Cantor, incidentally,
is sparking this program na-
tionally • . . Last week, one of
the women of the organiza-
tion, a World War II widow
and the mother of two small
children whose soldier father
fell in Europe, was at the
Michigan Central Station
where she found many trav-
elers happy to donate for this
cause . . During the course
of the day she was approach-
ed by a man who wanted to
know what organization she
represented . She told him,
and was horrified to hear him
demand then to know what
"those people" ever did for the
United States . Scarcely
aware of what she was saying,
Lillian Latzer muttered, "My
husband died for the United
States." . . It was the trav-
eler's turn to be taken aback
. . 'With-out a further word he
took $5 from his pocket, de-
posited it in the cannister, and
sheepishly disappeared into
the crowd.

MRS. EDITH WEISMAN,
the
charming lady behind the coun-
ter at the Herman Berlin shop
on Dexter, couldn't help but be
amazed at the young girl buying
baby wear galore, last week .. •
\ The girl scooted from one end
of the store to the other, say-
ing, "Gimme this" and "Gimme
that ... When the lass was fin-
ally finished, Edith asked if they
were to be wrapped together . .
and the girl replied, "Oh, no.
Each is a separate gift for the
15 baby showers I expect to go
to, next year!"

SOPHIE TUCKER got her
chance to show the entire coun-
try at one time her definite faith
in Judaism . . . when she re-
cently appeared on Ed Sullivan's
TV show, "Toast of the Town"
. The grand Sophie sang,
"You're Dreaming of a White
Christmas" . . . supplementing
the word "you" in every phase
appropriate in the famous Irv-
ing Berlin holiday song . . . so
as not to make any reference to
herself . . . This is Sophie's 46th
year in shcw business but she is
already looking to the big 50th
anniversary celebration whether
she retires or not . . . For the
next four years, at least, Sophie
will be sure to have a hand in
show business, one way or an-
other ... since one of her great-
est wishes is to live long enough
to see that 50th anniversary
celebration.

FAVORITE STORIES . . by
steel executive Irving Goldman
... about the fellow whose wife
trailed him to his favorite tav-
ern . Standing at the bar next
to him, she ordered a drink . .
Tasting it, she made a wry face
. . . Contempt covered her every
feature ... "How can you drink
that awful stuff?" gasped the
wife . . . "See, honey," he said,
exultingly. "And all these years
you thought I was having a good
time."

AMONG THE THOUSAND

lic dedication of the beautiful
new JWV Memorial Home was
a resident of Farmington,
