Alsop Says U. S. Must
Strengthen Arab States

NEW YORK, (JTA) - — Real
peace and stability in the Mid-
dle East is impossible for the
present, according to New York
Herald Tribune writer Stewart
Alsop, in a dispatch from Bagh-
dad. The writer said that the
Western Powers must buy time
in the Middle East to prevent
the Arab states from going the
way of China. The Arab States,
he declared, "are a sort of in-
flammable m u s h, politically,
economically and militarily."
He warned that American
policy faces the dilemma of
necessarily strengthening t h e
vr46-- Arab states to prevent their col-
lapse while at the same time
being aware that the Arab
States would, attack Israel again
if they thought they could suc-
ceed.
. "Leaving to one side all moral
or humane considerations,"
:Alsop declared, "another Arab-
•Israeli war would spell disaster
to Western interests. Hence the
- danger inherent in strengthen-
ing the Arab states, and hence
the cruel dilemma which con-
fronts American policy in the
Middle East."
T h e American writer con-
demned the "bastion of democ-
racy theory" under which all
strategic planning for the area
would be based on Israel, warn-
ing this would throw the Arab
states into the Soviet bloc. The
only way out, he said is "to
make it far more clear than it
has yet been made that any ag-
gression on either side will end
in final, fatal failure. Only in
this way Can the inflamed fear
of both Arabs and Israelis be
dealt with. And only thus can
the risk of strengthening the
Arab states be undertaken. The
risk is great. The results are
far from sure. Yet, if we are to
buy time here, the Arab states
must be decisively strengthened.

A Woman's Valor Led to

Serving Dairy Dishes

Among the incidents .of the
Maccabean stories is one about
the daughter of Jochanan the
high priest. It was by winning
the favor of one of the high
Greek officials that the noble
lady was able to bring victory
- to the fighting Jews. The general
was invited to feast with the
beautiful woman. She fed him
dishes made of cheese which
made him thirsty:He then drank
much wine which made him
drunk and sleepy. The brave
Jewess then cut off his head and
brought it to Jerusalem. This
incident has popularized the
. custom of serving dairy dishes
as a reminder of the miracle
performed by means of the milk,
food served by the high 'priest'.

Israel's Peat Resources
High in Huleh Region

Results of an intensive geo-
logical survey of the large peat
fields in the Huleh region, where
the Jewish National Fund's re-
clamation project is being car-
ried out, show that two layers
of peat exist at the five-meter
and 25-50 meter levels. Deeper
drilling will soon begin to deter-
mine if. brown coal lies below
the second layer. •
The high ash content of Huleh.
peat (28 percent) makes it un-
usable for fuel, although it is
highly suitable as a fertilizer.
L.,. Scientists have estimated that
5,000,000 tons of fuel could be
obtained, however, from the top
layer.
