The American Way vs. Vandalism

Miami's rabbis are correct in rejecting the proposal of
the Jewish War Veterans to provide armed protection to
houses of worship which are believed to be threatened by
additional acts of terrorism by vandals who have been at
large in recent weeks. The Justice Department and the Fed-
eral Bureau of Investigation have stepped into the picture
to' assist local authorities in efforts to preserve order, and
the Jewish community should place faith in these law-
preserving bodies.
We would be in a bad way indeed if it were to become
necessary for individual groups to resort to their own means
for the protection of life and property. That would mean
the end of the American way of life and the beginning of an
era of reaction. We refuse to believe that our democracy
has failed so thoroughly that it cannot cope with vandalism
and that private bodies will have to assume responsibility
for their own. protection. On the contrary, we believe that
order will be restored through the due processes of the law.
The Tsarist conditions, when Jews were compelled to
organize self-defense groups, still are within our memory.
We recall vividly the heroic, albeit frantic, formation of
squads which held vigil against pogromists in Russia. The
Jews of those days were untrained, unused to handling weap-
ons. Yet they were compelled to organize for the protection
of their families and their neighbors. But that was in Russia,
where the massacres were engineered by the government
itself, where JeWs had no chance either in or out of court,
a where the authorities themselves encouraged looting in order
to share in the wholesale robberies that followed the attacks
upon the Jews.
We would be untrue to our position as American citizens
if we were to dare compare the sporadic occurrences in
Miami to the pogroms in Russia. They are as distantly re-
moved as Russia from the United States, as slavery from
freedom, as injustice from righteousness.
Yes, the Miami rabbis are right. We have faith that the
Floridian incidents will end and that the American way will
prevail, and the Jewish War Veterans have convinced us in
our opinion by dropping their impractical plan.
