Symphony Family
Concert on Sunday

Detroit's new Symphony Or-
chestra will present its second
Family Concert Sunday, Dec. 23,
3 p.m., in the Masonic Auditor-
ium. with Valter Poole conduct-
ing. The concert, designed for
the entertainment of the entire
family. will feature Carol Brice,
contralto, and the entire Or-
pheus Club of Detroit in a pro-
grain light and popular. In
keeping with the "Pop" concert
motif, prices for reserved seats
will be 60 cents and $1 at the
Symphony office, TE. 1-3900.
The program will include
Tchaikovhky's "Nutcracker
Suite," Rimsky- Korsakoff's
"Scheherazade," Brahms' "Alto
Rhapsody," Bach's Chorale Pre-
lude and others.
In 1944 Carol Brice, brilliant
young Negro contralto, was the
first of her race ever to win
music's coveted Naumberg
Foundation Award which led to
her debut in New York's Town
Hall. Among her many appear-
ances with major symphony or-
chestras in this country are ten
with Boston's Symphony under
Serge Koussevitzky. In recogni-
tion of her rare talent, the Na-
tional Council of Negro Women
honored her in 1948 as "out-
standing Negro woman musi-
cian."
The Orpheus Club of Detroit,
which shares the featured role
at the Family Concert, was or-
ganized in 1900.

Offer. Courses in Hebrew

NEW YORK (JTA) — A total
of 38 public schools in New York
City are offering courses in He-
brew this semester, it was an-
nounced here by Judah
Lapson, director of the Hebrew
Culture Council of the Jewish
Education Committee.
Mr. Lapson reported that 26
senior high schools, two evening
high schools and 10 junior high
schools are teaching Hebrew
courses. He also revealed that
for the first time a New Haven,
Connecticut, high school is of-
fering a Hebrew course this year.

BOSTON, (JTA) — The 30th
anniversary of the Hebrew
Teachers College here, the only
Hebrew teachers' school in the
United States, was marked with
a convocation attended by some
1,000 persons. It was announced
at the function that the College
has acquired a new two-story
fireproof building in the Brook-
line area which is expected to be
occupied within the next few
months.

Triwaks Arrives in America

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Itzhak
Triwaks, noted Israeli philolo-
gist, arrived here to arrange for
the sale of the 16-volume En-
cyclopedia Hebraica, now being
published in Israel under the
editorship of Prof. Israel Klaus-
ner.

Sir Simon Marks Honored
LONDON, (JTA)—Dr. Abra-
ham Granott, world head of the
Jewish National Fund, handed
Sir Simon Marks, veteran Zion-
ist leader, the deed to Cheval
Shimon, a 5,000-acre tract of
land purchased by British Jews
for the JNF as a tribute to Sir
Simon's work in behalf of Zion-
ism and the state of Israel, at
a dinner at the conclusion of the
national convention of the Brit-
ish JNF.
