Eleanor Lipkin
Sparkles at Music
Study Club Recital

The last public appearance of
Eleanor Lipkin in her native
Detroit was over five years ago.
The results of the intervening
years devoted to study and
practice were evident on Dec. 5
when, as the guest artist of the
Music Study Club, Miss Lipkin
was featured in a piano recital
at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Miss Lipkin, now 21, displayed
complete in a s-
tery of the key-
board in a pro-
gram which
d e o n strated
h e r versatility
to good advan-
tage.
After opening
her program
with sonatas by
Scarlatti and Beethoven, Miss
Lipkin played the eight - part
Fantasiestucke, Opus 12 by
Schumann, in which she created
and beautifully expressed to the
audience the varied moods of
the composer.
"Reflets dans l'eau" (Reflec-
tions in the Water) by Debussy
was performed with the deftness
of touch and soft tones neces-
sary for such an airy composi-
tion.
Of particular interest on the
program w a s Constant Vau-
claM's "Three Degas," the first
performance of the piece in De-
troit. Vauclain, a teacher at the
Curtis Institute, wrote it in 1949,
and it showed well Miss Lip-
kin's dexterity in the quick-
moving Presto and melodious
Andantino.
Her closing "Sonata No. 2 in
D Minor by Prokofieff brought
her back to the stage for two
encores. .Miss L i p k i n, now
teaching and taking classe's at
the University of Pennsylvania,
is a mature artist whom Detroit
audiences will see much more.
The concert was the 15th an-
niversary program of the Music
Study Club, which began its
practice • of helping talented
'musicians in 1924.

Americans have made note-
worthy gains in extending and
protecting basic civil rights in
the four-year period ending this
month, the American Jewish
Committee revealed in "The
People Take the Lead," a year-
end survey issued on the eve of
the 160th Anniversary of the
Bill of Rights.
Jacob Blaustein, the organiza-
tion's president, in announcing
the report, pointed out that this
progress has been registered de-
spite the fact that major mea
sures, recommended by the
President's Committee on Civil
Rights in 1947, have remained
bottled up in various commit-
tees of Congress.
