Tales of Two Cities: Anti-Semitism in Boston and Miami •

National Jewish agencies have made demands for action by
Federal authorities against the upsurge of anti-Semitism in Miami.
In another great American community, in Boston, Jews similarly
have experienced outbursts of hatred.
These are tales of two known communities where anti- Sem
ites have made inroads into the peace of America. There have
been anti-Semitic acts in other communities. Some of us will
recall the sad experiences . in Charlevoix about 10 years ago.
Jews are not the only sufferers from anti-Semitism. Charle-
voix was like a cemetery for a couple of years after the anti-
Semitic incidents: Its neighboring city of Frankfort has not yet
regained the large Jewish vacationing clientele it had lost because
of the iciness with which Jews were greeted there. Miami's mer-
chants won't like a reaction that will be expressed in the form of
a "stay-away" movement, and we believe, therefore, that the
authorities will act speedily to end the shameful recurrence of
vandalism. In the meantime, Miami's name is stained. Boston
needs a scrubbing. American cities must be cleansed of the filth
in which it has been immersed by anti-Semites. Remove the KKK
Hood from our Democracy!

Look for 'The Hood' in 'Christian AFL'

There is something devilish about the formation of the "Chris-
tian Anti-Defamation League" with offices in Detroit under the
direction of Dr. Lawrence Reilly. It is not mere aping that has
caused this mysterious group to imitate Bnai Brith's ADL name.
A release to the press from the new "Christian" group reveals its
motives. The release attacks the Chicago Jewish Sentinel for its
demand for maximum reparations by Germany. The - Christian
ADL"—true Christians, we are certain, will be humiliated by such
misuse of sanctity—then proceeds to defend the Nazis, to lay
claim that 6,000,000 could not have been murdered since there
were -only 500,000 Jews in Germany on Nov. 8, 1938; that "there
were hundreds of synagogues and 600,000 Jews in Germany" until
that date; that "thousands of Jews remained in Germany, out-
side of concentration camps, until the war ended."
Such pro-Nazism isn't even subtle. It is clear-cut defense of
the Nazi-Germans; it seeks to veil the murder of 6,000,000 Jews
who were gathered from many European lands into concentration
camps in Germany and in Poland and defies facts by using the
ruse that there were not that many Jews in Germany proper.
We repeat: Christians undoubtedly will be ashamed of their
coreligionists who abuse a Christian title and seek to mimick a
Jewish group as means of condoning mass murder. Look for
the hood on this Detroit group!

Benjamin Buttenwieser and the Neo Nazi Trends

-

Less than 20 months ago, Benjamin Buttenwieser, who is
retiring as Assistant U. S. High Commissioner for Germany, was
target of attack by the Anti-Defamation League before whose
meeting he was scheduled to appear . in Chicago. His address was
cancelled because the "general tenor" of his prepared speech was
"an apologia for the limited job that has been done to denazify
Germany." ADL then charged that his speech would have given
"aid encouragement to those vicious elements in the 'new German
nationalism' which Mr. Buttenwieser admits are re-emerging
today." •
Now, the retiring Assistant High Commissioner points to the
"distressing" number of anti-Semitic incidents in Germany and
states that the percentage of Germans who are evincing a desire
to do the right thing to atone for their sins is "disappointingly
small." He has expressed regret -over the failure of Germans to
cooperate in planning to make it agreeable for Jews to live in
Germany and stated that the offer of restitution and indemnifi-
cation is "conceived in a noble spirit" but that the test will come
in implementation, progress in which he described as "sloW and
meager." But the Germans have not "gone out of their way to
help German Jews make a comeback" although they should have
had a "feeling of revulsion over the nightmare of the past," Mr.
Buttenwieser told the New York Times correspondent in Bonn.
His new views, gained after another 20 months of sad experi-
ences in Germany, represent a reversal in his thinking. They
justify the action of those who cancelled his address in which he
appeased the Nazis. In May of 1950 he gave courage to the Ger-
man anti-Semites in "an apologia" that was not spoken but nev-
ertheless was given wide publicity. His current views are not
strong enough to destroy the bad effects of his earlier thinking.
Had he taken a different stand early in 1950, it is reasonable to
believe that the neo-Nazis would not have made the progress they
attained as a result of the lukewarm attitude towards them by
Americans—and in this instance by a prominent Jew.

Seaman's Strike
Creates Serious
Rifts in Israel

Direct JTA Teletype Wire to
The Jewish News •

JERUSALEM—Israel's Knesset
i held a stormy debate on the
seamen's strike, with Communi-
cations Minister David Pinkas
accusing t h e strikers of at-
tempting to sabotage Israel's
Navy.
Urging the deputies to con-
demn the strike and approve
the government's policy in this
matter, Minister Pinkas said,
"I'd like to see any hands raised
here in favor of seamen striking
in foreign ports." He insisted
that the seamen's action was
not a strike but a walkout.
Since the government had not
been advised by the maritime
workers • of the steps they in-
tended to take, the government
would not receive a delegation
of those who walked out, the
Minister insisted.
Earlier, Mapai Deputy Pinhas
Lavon, former Minister of Agri-
culture, attacked the seamen
for their "wild unauthorized
strike which is paralyzing Is-
rael's young merchant marine."
Jacob Chazan of the Mapain
accused the Mapai of precipitat-
ing the strike by breaking the
seamen's union.
Before the .debate began the
Knesset officially noted the gov-
ernment's statement on the re-
port of a committee which in-
vestigated charges that detained
members of the religious under-
ground Brit Kanaim had been
ill-treated by policemen..
During his address the com-
munications minister reported
that when the strike began Is-
r a e l's merchant marine em-
ployed 1,100 seamen of whom
882 were Israelis and 218 were
foreigners. Mr. Pinkas left for
The United States Tuesday to
address the United Jewish Ap-
peal conference in Atlantic City.

State Dept. Seeks
Visa Law Change

WASHINGTON — (JTA) — The
State Department will seek
easement f r o m Congress of
some of the provisions of the
McCarran Act as they pertain
to the granting of visas to visit-
ing scientists, artists, educators
and others who have recently
been denied visas to enter the
United States. It was reported
that the United States Govern-
ment has been embarrassed
abroad by the refusal of visas
to eminent persons who have
sought to enter the U. S. for a
visit.
The most recent incident of
this sort was denial of a visa
to Dr. Ernest Boris Chain, Euro-
pean Jewish scientist who shared
the Nobel Prize for his work in
connection with the discovery
of the use of the drug penicil-
lin. Last week Meyer Weisgal,
chairman of the executive coun-
cil of the Weizmann Institute of
Science at Rehovoth, released
a letter by Dr. Chain in which he
protested the S t a t e Depart-
ment's refusal of a visa as a de-
nial of his civil rights.
Dr. ,Chain's letter revealed
that he had been denied a visa
when he sought to enter the
country on a mission for the
United Nations' affiliate, World
Health Organization, and again
when he sought to attend the
annual Weizmann Birthday
Dinner in New York last week,
at which funds are raised for
the Weizmann Institute's sci-
entific work.

8 Arab Marauders Killed;
4 Wounded; 32 Detained

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Eight Arab
marauders were killed in the
north central and southern dis-
tricts of Israel, according to a
military spokesman who said
four marauders were wounded
and 32 were detained. He com-
mented that this is "further
proof of a deteriorating situa-
tion on our borders. Despite the
assurances given by Arab dele-
gates to the mixed armistice
commissions, Arab infiltrators
still cross our borders in num-
bers."

Washington Moods

Strong pro-Israel moods now prevail in Washington . . . It is
expected that Truman, in his Presidential message at the re-
opening of Congress, will urge American aid to Israel in 1952 on X
much larger scale than the $65,000,000 grant-in-aid this year .. .
It is also known that the Pentagon favors substantial military aid
to Israel . . . This despite the fact that Israel has apparently not
•applied for such aid officially . . . The reason why Israel refrains
from asking for military aid lies in the fear that the Jewish State
may be requested to disclose certain army secrets to the Pentagon
. . . This is opposed by Israeli officers trained in Haganah tradi-
tions of security . . . They are afraid that military information
given Washington may sooner or later reach the Arabs . . . Amer-
ican government experts who were sent to study the economic
outlook in Israel have returned from there with an interesting
report . . . They established that much can be done in Israel with
American technical aid . . . Their study was made, without any
publicity, in preparation for the departure for Israel of Bruce
McDaniel, the American coordinator of technical aid for Israel ...
By the time this is printed, Mr. McDaniel will already be in Israel
. . There is a good deal of confusion regarding his relations with
Edwin A. Locke, Jr., who was appointed special representative of
the Secretary of State and left for the Near East to coordinate
American technical aid to Israel and the Arab states . . . It is not
known whether McDaniel is to submit his reports to Locke, or is
to send them direct to Washington ... At any rate, Israel will now
have to deal with two American coordinators . . . The more, the
better, since it indicates greater American interest in Israel.

Domestic Affairs

The number of young Jews joining the American.armed forces
is . growing from month to month . . There will soon be about
200,000 Jewish youths in the U. S. Army, Navy and Air Force
This is an impressive figure considering that this country is in-
volved in only a "cold war" and not a shooting war, except in
Korea . .. In the last World War there were about 600,000 Jews
in the U. S. armed forces, and at that the figure demonstrated that
Jewish participation in the armed services was much larger than
the proportion of Jews to the general population . . . The present
participation is even larger, considering the fact that during the
war men were drafted up to the age of 45, while now only the
young are being conscripted . . To get an idea what 200,000
people mean as an armed force, it is sufficient to say that there
are quite a number of small countries where the entire army has
fewer than 200,000 men . . . This is true today even with regard to
Israel which is still in a state of war with the neighboring Arab
countries ... It must be added that many young men in the U. S.
armed forces are not identified as Jews because of their non-
Jewish sounding names ... Believe or not, but you can find in the
armed forces Jewish men with names like Victor Cassuto, Robert
Clifford, Frank P. Daughtery, Harold D. Flanagan, Wilbur Quint,
Paul Hanson, Sergio Pacific', Seymour Ponemone . . . The war
records compiled by the National Jewish Welfare Board carry
many such non-Jewish sounding names of men definitely known
to have been of Jewish extraction.
