David Zvi Pinkas the latest ad-
dition to a distinguished group
of speakers drawn from Ameri-
can and Jewish public life, the
United Jewish Appeal this Fri-
day, in Atlantic City, N. J., will
open its annual national confer-
ence to determine American
Jewry's -role in 1952 for continu-
ation of urgent immigration,
settlement a n d rehabilitation
programs involving hundreds of
thousands of Jews in all parts of
the world.
The three-day National Con-
ference, meeting at the Tray-
more Hotel, will evaluate the
1952 financial requirements of
the UJA's constituent agencies—
United Palestine Appeal, Joint
Distribution Committee a n d
United Service for New Ameri-
cans—and set both the objec-
tives and the stage for the Ap-
peal's nationwide campaign in
the coming year.
Mr. Pirikas, visiting the United
States for the first time since
becoming a member of the Israel
Cabinet, will report on the acute
food, housing and medical needs
confronting his country and the
impact of these shortages on
programs of immigration, set-
tlement and absorption.
The Israel Minister of Com-
munications is also chairman of
the Israel National Committee of
the world Mizrachi movement.

Truman Bans Bias
In Contract Hiring
KEY WEST, Fla., (JTA) —
President Truman signed a fair
employment practices order
which would prevent discrimin-
ation against members of min-
ority groups in the hiring of
employees by firms carrying out
government contracts.
The order prohibits discrim-
ination based on "race, creed,
color, or national origin." It
provides for the creation of a
Committee on Government Con-
tract Compliance made up of
six members who will be named
later, in addition to representa-
tives of the Department of De- -
fense, Department of La b o r,
Atomic Energy Commission,
Gene ral Services Administra-
tion, a n d Defense Materials
Procurement Agency.

DENVER
homes of five prominent Jewish
families, including that of the
chairman of the American Coun-
cil for Judaism here, were
wrecked when a B-29 crashed in
the Jewish Hilltop section.
Crew members of the Air Force
bomber were killed but occu-
pants of the wrecked homes
miraculously escaped injuries.
One of the homes wrecked,
the Intermountain Jewish News
reported, was that of Col. Stan-
ley Shubart, who heads the
American Council for Judaism
in Denver.

Hashofar Society Starts Jewish Music Library
Hashofar society for the ad-
vancement of Jewish music, this
week presented a collection of
Jewish music to the Detroit
Public Library. To be known as
the. Hashofar Library of Jewish
Music, it will consist of vocal
and instrumental sheet music,
which will be available to the
public.
Julius Chajes is chairman of
the project committee, and is
assisted by Sadie Braver Cooper,
violinist and teacher, and Iola
Schipler, director of music at the
United Hebrew Schools.
Proceeds of the Leah Crohn
concert to be held during Jewish
Music Month will further the
project. Composers are asked to
donate their music to the col-
lection.
Harvey Seigel, young violinist
and member of the Detrot Sym-
phony Orchestra, will be fea-
tured at Hashofar' second musi-
cale Sunday, at the home of the
Benjamin Laikins. Accompanied_
by Mrs. Isadore Mendelsohn, he
will play selections from Bloch,
Achron and Mendelssohn. Miss
Schipler will lead community
singing.
