Iraq Abolishes Jewish
Courts, 100 Years Old
LONDON (JTA) - The Iraq
Ministry of Justice has abolish-
eu the Jewish religious court and
the Jewish court of appeals
which were established in Bagh-
dad more than 100 years ago.
Successive Iraqi regimes had
given these courts legal author-
ity to deal with communal and
personal matters affecting Jews,
including issues of marriage, di-
vorce and inheritance. Emigra-
tion of the members of the
courts and the lack of qualified
candidates to fill vacancies was
given as reason for the govern-
ment action. Most of the Iraqi
Jewish population was evacuat-
ed to Israel earlier this year.
SCA President Asks
Hanukah Bond Sales
Rabbi Simon G. Kr a m e r,
president of t h e Synagogue
Council of America, has called
for a special Hanukah effort in
support of the state of Israel
bond issue. His communication
urging increased activity for the
$500,000,000 bond drive was ad-
dressed to 2,500 Orthodox, Con-
servative and Reform - Rabbis
throughout the country, who are
affiliated with the Council.
This year's observance of
Hanukah is being dedicated by
Jewish communities in all . parts
of the United States to a special
effort in behalf of the Israel
bond drive.

UJA Raised $750,000,000
During Thirteen Years
NEW YORK - (JTA) - More
than $750,000,000 has been rais-
ed by the United Jewish Appeal
during the 13 years of its exist-
ence, it was revealed by Dr. Jo-
seph J. Schwartz, executive vice-
chairman, in connection with
the forthcoming national con-
ference of the UJA which is to
open on Dec. 14 in Atlantic City.
More than 1,500 Jewish leaders
from ,all parts of the country
are expected to attend the con-
ference at which plans will be
mapped for the 1952 UJA cam-
paign.
