Miami; Truman Shows Concern
Ideological Battle - I aspired by
Lipsi.cfs - Attack on ZOA Policies
NEW YORK.—(AJP)—A sharp attack upon the present course embarked upon by the
Zionist Organization of America hurled by veteran Zionist leader LoUis Lipsky at a 75th
birthday celebration drew frowns from top ZOA leaders attending the party. -
Lipsky, attacking "the tendency in the Zionist movement to revert to reminiscences and
' memoirs" as a "waste of energy, singled out the ZOA for seeking to identify jtself with spe-
cific projects in Israel.
"It seems that the ZOA has lost its identity and is looking around to find it," Lipsky told
more than 350 guests at the parry.
Taking to task the recently adopted ZOA project program for Israel,. Lipsky termed the
move as "30 years behind the times."
He recalled that the ZOA "was strong as long as it was unconcerned with itself" and work-
instead
for the Zionist ideal.
ed
The veteran Zionist leader predicted that ties between Israelis and American Jews will
grow stronger in future years. - -
- - A number of top leaders of the ZOA attending the party, obviously annoyed with Lipsky's
blast, contended that the occasion did not call for an attack upon the ZOA, especially, according
to one spokesman, "in front of leaders of other parties."
Lipsky's statements were not challenged, one ZOA leader said, "only because of 'the occa,.
- sion." Similar attacks by Lipsky at the recent Chicago conference of ZOA leaders, it was report-
ed, drew strong fire.

MIAMI (AJP)—Agents of the Federal Bureau of In-
vestigation, acting on direct orders of Justice Department
chief J. Howard MCGrath, probed the dynamiting of a
synagogue and a Negro housing project here to determine
whether Federal statutes had been violated.
President Truman, vacationing in nearby Key West,
was quoted as being gravely concerned over the terrorism.
The President, informed of the raids through his per-
sonal secretary, reportedly urged the FBI to probe the
bombings.
The, FBI's entrance into the tension-ridden reign of
terror against Jewish houses -of worship followed on the
heels of two strong appeals, one by the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith and the other from the Jewish War
Veterans of the U. S., that Federal enforcement agencies
take immediate action in prosecuting the dynamite vandals,
Attorney General - McGrath said in Washington that he
had instructed FBI agents to move in on the area in an
effort to determine if any violation of the civil rights laws
or other Federal rulings were involved.
Meanwhile city officials offered rewards totaling
upwards to $9,000 for the- arrest and conviction of those
responsible for the explosions.
Jewish leaders, joined by members of the Christian
clergy, earlier demanded increased police protection. The
latest dynamiting of the Miami Hebrew School and Con-
gregation resulted in damage to more than 40 window
panes. Other recent bombings have been at the Tifereth
Israel Northside Jewish Center on June 5 and Temple Israel
On Oct. 9.
The rabbis Miami Beach expressed horror at the
Jewish War Veterans proposal to set up armed guards
at synagogues to prevent bombings. The rabbis expressed
confidence in the ability of the authorities, with the aid
of the FM, to provide the needed protection.
The bombings constitute only part of the .anti-Jewish
acts. Violent anti-Semitic signs and attacks against a Jew-
ish cemetery have served further to add to the tenseness
which has gripped this area,
A new attempt to dynamite another synagogue was disclosed
this week. Racial terrorists, in their second attack against a
Jewish center in the Miami area in less than a week, hurled a
lighted stick of dynamite at a Coral Gables synagogue. It did
not explode because its fuse was severed when it struck a tree
by mistake, police said.
Hint of the attack first came with an anonymous telephone
threat late Saturday night, but it fell to a 12-year-old Boy Scout,
Arnold Levy, who discovered the explosive lying in the street in
front of the 'Synagogue.
Meanwhile, the Jewish Community Council of New Haven,
Conn., offered a $500.00 reward for the conviction of vandals who
desecrated 11 Jewish and one Protestant cemetery. A third sore
spot developed in New York. Police are probing the appearance
of more than 500 crude signs in the Brooklyn area..
Cpngressional Action Planned
WASHINGTON, (AJP)—A sharp, warning to the Jus-
tice Department that any laxity in pressing a full probe
into the bombings of Jewish synagogues and Negro apart-
ments in Miami would result in the introduction of a severe
bill to end the reign of terror, was issued by a New York
congressman. Rep. Louis B, Heller (D.-N.Y.) , urging ac-
tion, disclosed he was prepared to introduce a bill which
would double or triple penalties for vandalism.
Urging immediate action, Heller recalled that a similar
bill introduced by him in the New York legislature in 1943-
44 virtually ended a "wave of vandalism" which gripped the
Empire State.

World famous sculptor Jo Davidson arrived in Israel recently with a neatly wrapped
statue snugly packed in a large box. Off to the home of President Chaim Weizmann went
Davidson to make the formal presentation of a bust of the late Lord Balfour, author of
the famed Balfour Declaration pledging British support for the establishment of a Jewish
homeland in Palestine. Before a small audience of officials and friends, Davidson made a
short address before the covered statue - whil e U. S. Ambassador to Israel Monnett Davis

Knox Helm, British Minister to Israel and President Weizmann. World Jewry, praying for
Dr. Weizmann's speedy recovery, shares with him the joy that accompanies his re-election
to the Presidency of Israel and the high honors that are being accorded him -in" recognition
o his great contributions to science and to the national redemption of Israel.
