Doctors and Lay Leaders Honored
For Services to North End Clinic

A quarter of a century of effort
In the field of healing was ac-
claimed here on Nov. 28, at the
25th anniverary dinner of North
End CliniC, at Hotel Statler,. by
more than 400 prominent De-
troiters, most of them the physi-
cians and dentists who are serv-
ing on the clinic's staff and
their wives.
It was occasion for reminis-
cences and for the award of
honors to those who have ren-
dered service during the entire
ora of the clinic's existence.
Miss Selma J. Sampliner,
director of the clinic since the
retirement in 1938 of the first
director, Mrs. Eleanor Jones
Ford, was singled out for spe-
cial honors for her devoted
services. Miss Sampliner was
commended by the president
of the clinic, David Wilkus,
and by the toastmaster, Dr.
Hyman Mellen.
Reminiscing about early ef-
forts in the field of health im-
provement in the Jewish com-
munity, Julian Krolik, a former
president of the clinic, told of
the pioneering work of the
Frauen Verein in 1900, the clini-
cal activities in the Hannah
Schloss Building in 1903, the
work that was sponsored in the
Jewish Institute in 1908 by the
late Bernard Ginsburg. the es-
tablishment of the Fresh Air
Society and finally the founda-
tion of the North End Clinic
when Mrs. Leopold Winetnan, in
1925, contributed the sum of
$75,000 for the establishment of
North End Clinic. It was the
largest contribution to a Jewish
cause in Detroit on record up
to that time.
Samuel Rubiner, president of
the Jewish Welfare Federation,
with which the clinic is affiliat-
ed, in an address greeting the
gathering, offered testimony of
the high regard in which the
clinic is held.
Mr. Wilkus, who in his open-

Yehudi Menuhin, son of a He-
brew, teacher, native New Yorker,
who rose to international fame
as a violinst, will appear at the
Masonic Temple, Dec. 13. In
1929, when he r
w as 13, two
years after his
enormous s u c -
cess in P aris
and New York,
Menuhin made
his debut with
the Berlin Phil-
harmonic, play-
ing, all in one
session, the Menuhin
Bach, Beethoven and Brahms
Violin Concerti. The temper of
the audience was demonstrated
after the concert by a small, ex-
cited, brushy-haired • man who,
upon meeting the young artist,
exclaimed: "Today you once
more have proved to me that
there is a God in Heaven," lift-
ed the youngster off his feet and
kissed him. The excited man

ing address, welcomed the estab-
lishment of the Jewish Hospital
in Detroit, together with Dr.
Saul Rosenzweig, assistant chief
of the clinic's medical staff,
made numerous awards to those
who had distinguished them-
selves in their services to the
clinic. Among those honored
were the following doctors who
have given 25 years of services:
Drs. Harry August, Louis Bar-
nett, Arthur Bloom, Martin Feld-
stein, Laslo Galdonyi, A. C.
Hamburger, Eli W. Harelik,
Harry Kirschbaum, Ezra Lipkin,
Solomon G. Meyers, David J.
Sandweiss, I. S. Schembeck, Ben-
Jamin Shlain; Harry Topcik.
Dr. Rosenzweig, upon receiving
one of the awards, responded for
the recipients, making intimate
comments upon the work of
each individual recipient.
Lay leaders and other staff
workers who received awards
included: Miss Edith Heaven-
rich, Julian Krolik, Mrs. Lucy
Topcik, Mrs. Elsie Wunderlich,
Mrs. Beulah Woods (in absen-
tia).
Dr. Solomon G. Meyers, as
chief of staff, in addition to
introducing the guest speaker,
Dr. Donald A. Covalt, profes-
sor at New York University
college of medicine, thanked
those associated with him. He
pointed out that in addition
to the doctors who have
earned respect and thanks
from the community that
honor is due on this anniver-
sary to the wives of the doc-
tors, who have shared in their
sacrifices while serving the
community, and to the pa-
tients.
Dr. Co valt described the
miracles that are being attained
through physical therapy, the
manner in which preventive re-
habilitation is assisting t h e
chronically ill and how men in
service are being rescued for a
better life.
"Every man should get a
chance in life . and we have a
duty to return him as a factor
of good to his community," he
stated. He told of the remark-
able results of vocational reha-
bilitation programs. "Treating
the whole man is important," he
added. Admitting the high cost
of such a program, he empha-
sized that it nevertheless is
worth all that is being spent on
it because of the great good it
does to the community at large.
