fire to carry peace terms be-
tween Haganah and the Irgun

raeli armed forces. He was a
spokesman for. Jewish resistance
to the British administfation of
Palestine, although as a British
subject he was particularly Vul-
nerable to reprisals.
As Chief Rabbi. of Tel Aviv
since 1946, he reorganized and
extended traditional Jewish ed-
ucation in Medinat Israel. As
Chief Rabbi of Liverpool from
1923 to 1946, he was one of the
