'Fine' Idea Used to Teach
Hebrew to African Youth
Yitzhak Rafael, head of the
Immigration Department of the
Jewish Agency, who' just return-
ed from a tour of Jewish com-
munities in North Africa, praised
a e educational work of the
eren Kayemeth, evidences of
which he noted throughout his
trip. He related that when he
left the ancient synagogue of
one North African ghetto, he
was startled to hear two young-
sters speaking Hebrew. When he
asked whether they usually Spoke
Hebrew, the reply was that the
entire class had sworn to speak
only Hebrew and that those who
forgot and lapsed into Arabic or
French had to pay a fine of some
.2 francs for every word uttered
in those languages. The fine
went into the Keren Kayemeth's

Supreme Court Asked to Settle
Religious Adoption Mixup
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The
United States Supreme Court
_was asked to reverse the deci-
sion of the Appellate Division of
the New York Supreme Court in
the case of two children orig-
inally placed for adoption . as
Jewish but later claimed as
Catholics. The lower court
ruling is being challenged
as a violation of the principle
of separation of church and
state.
The action was taken by the
Free Synagogue Child Adoption
Committee in behalf of Diana
and Linda Souther, aged 8 and 7,
who were placed for adoption
three years ago as Jewish. The
mother, subsequently asserted
that she was Catholic and that
the children had been baptized
Catholics and sought to get
them back.

Agree to Sail Ships
With Libyan Immigrants
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The strik-
ing Israeli Seamen's Association
offered to provide men to sail
immigrant vessels to North Afri-
ca to remove Libyan Jews who
are being evacuated to Israel on
an emergency basis before Jan.
1, when the Arab country be-
comes independent. The Jewish
Agency accepted the offer and
three immigrant vessels will sail
for Tripoli shortly.
Meanwhile, the union has ap-
proached two private shipping
lines, the Shoham and M. Dizen-
goff companies, and has offered
to man their vessels if the com-
panies agree to deal with the
Association directly, as a trade
union. The companies turned
down the offer, stating that they
were acting on-instructions from
the Ministry of Communications.
The Histadrut was reported
considering the establishment of
a separate seamen's union,, in
opposition to the Association
which began the strike in a dis-
pute with the Histadrut over the
Association's - demand for au-
tonomy within the labor ... federa-
tion.
