Jews, Non-Jews Mourn
Death of Silverstein,
Noted Music Teacher

The death on Nov. 22 of Ber-
nard I. Silverstein, popular mu-
sic teacher at Central High
School,' came as a distinct shock
to the entire community. Mr. Sil-
verstein, whose home was at
2448 Clairmount, died in a traf-
fic accident at Michigan City,
Ind. He was on the way for a
three-day hOliday with his wife,
Ida, who escaped with minor in-
j uries. S .
Hundreds of his .co-workers,
former students and admirers,
present students and teachers
at Central, "at 'least half of them
non-Jews, filed the chapel of
'Lewis Br others on Sunday
morning at the funeral service
at which Rabbi Morris Adler of-
ficiated. Interment was in Work-
men's Circle Cemetery.
Mr. Silverstein, who was 46,
is survived; besides his wife, by
a son, Joseph, a member of the
Texas Symphony; a sister, Leah
Love, and brothers, Samuel S.,
Harry Silvers and George.
Organizer of the All-City
High School Orchestra, Mr. Sil-
verstein, acquired national rec-
ognition for his efforts in be-
half of music students in our
schools. He organized quartets
trlined choruses and orchestras,
was known as one' of the ablest
violin teachers and his pupils
now play in major orchestras
throughout the land. He has
written books on violin methods.
A recent hobby of his also has
been silver work. He had marked
ability with his hands and the
silver .objects. he made now are
on sale in the Little Gallery in
Birmingham.

Plan Memorial Meeting

zah Ivrith have arranged a meet-
ing dedicated to the memory of
Joel Cashdan, to be held at 9
p.m., in the auditorium of the
Rose Sittig Cohen building,
13226 Lawton.
Participants in the program
are Dr. A. M. Hershman, Mau-
rice H. Zackheim. Bernard No-
bel, president of Agudath Ha-
morin, will open the meeting and
Cantor J. H. Sonenklar will re-
cite the El Moley Rachamim.
Friends _of the late Mr. Cash-
dan, widely known for his
scholarship and knowledge of
the Talmud and for many years
a Hebrew school teacher, are
invited to attend.
