Jewish Soprano, Twice
Nixed by U.S Opera,
Wins Acclaim in Italy

CHICAGO—(AJP)—A Jewish
soprano, twice shunned by the
American opera, won the wild
acclaim of discriminating opera
fans at Verona, Italy, and is on
her way to a career which she
hopes will lead 490 the Met.
The girl's smashing success in
Italy came as no surprise to
Sandra Kohn's neighbors on
Roosevelt Road here. Though
turned down two years ago in
two separate auditions at the
Metropolitan Opera in New York
City, Sandra and her friends
kept faith in her vocal ability.
Known professionally as San-
dra Kaye, the new opera star is

Anthony Muto. Washington's
representative of the ,film com-

acting director of the Bureau of
German Affairs of the State De-

aware of the "true facts" when
he wrote Paul Ginsberg, national
commander of the Jewish War
Veterans, that the Department
opposed the showing of the film
in Germany:
The German portions of the
film were produced with the
"knowledge and co-operation"
of McCloy, he stated. Henry J.
Kellermann, a State Department
official, refused to read the
script but did indicate that he
thought it would be unwise to
exhibit such a film in Germany,
Muto said. He added that Kel-

AJ Committee Denies
Charge of Isolationism

WASHINGTON ( JTA ) T h e
Supreme Court ruled against a
number of New York Jewish
parents who wanted to send
their children to a Brooklyn re-
ligious school where the curric-
ulum does not conform to state
requirements.
The Court dismissed the chal-
lenge to the New York educa-
tion law and left standing judg-
ments convicting the parents of
violating a statute requiring
school age children to take re-
quired courses of study at a
recognized school. It was point-
ed out that the religious school
in Brooklyn is not recognized
by the Jewish Education Com-
mittee which supervises secular
teaching in Hebrew parochial
schools.

CALL ANNA KARBAL

JERUSALEM (JTA ) —A bill pro-
viding for establishment of new
foreign currency was introduced
in the Israeli Parliament by Fi-
nance Minister Eliezer Kaplan,.
calling for registration of gold
holdings of private persons and
authority for the government to
sell this gold with the approval-
on the Parliament's Finance
Committee.
Kaplan painted a gloomy pic-
ture of the Israel financial and
economic situation. In the 42
months that the state of Israel
has existed, he said, imports
reached the total of nearly 300,-
000,000 pounds ($840,000,000).
During the same period, he
noted, exports amounted to 40,-
000,000 pounds ($112,000,000).
About 260,000,000 pounds
($728,000,000) in foreign currency
was mobilized abroad from the
Jewish national funds, two in-
ternational loans and foreign
investments, the finance minis-
ter reported. He called for in-
creased agricultural and indus-
trial production.
The finance minister lashed
out at individuals and settle ,.
ments and "imporatnt public in-
stitutions" who he said, put their
own interests above the state
by trading in foreign currency.
