Lt. Leon Hoffman Wins
Silver Star — at ion 's
Third HighestUedal
This country's third highest
medal for gallantry in combat
was awarded to Lt. Leon Hoff-
man on Aug. 26. Hoffman's wife,
Nettie, who lives with their
daughter. Beverly R.orma„ at
2270 Fullerton, received the cita-
tion from the U. S. Army earlier
this month.
Lt. Hoffman was cited for ac-
tion which took place in Umi-
donee Korea on May 18. As lead-
er of a rifle platoon when the
Red army at-
tacked a bitter-
ly-f ought for
hill. L t . Hoff-

When fire was
Lt. Hoffman directed against
American troops, inflicting many
casualties, Lt. Hoffman took an
automatic rifle from one of his
men and. led a charge to take
back the hill, exposing himself
to enemy fire and drawing their
attention while his men regain-
ed control of the strategic hill.
Mrs. Hoffman said she knew
about her husband's winning of
the medal, although until the
certificate came she had no idea
of why it was won. He had writ-
ten her before, "If anyone were
in my shoes, they'd do the same
thing. Its just a messy job that
has to be done."
In the Aug. 10 edition of The
Jewish News, an article told of
Lt. Hoffman's winning of the
Bronze Star. Since, he has won
the Silver Star, the Presidential
unit- citation, and an oak leaf
cluster for the b r onze star.
While on furlough, - Lt, Hoffman
called from Japan• expressing
the hope that he will be home
sometime in January or Febru-
ary.
A veteran of World War II,
Lt. Hoffman won both the bronze
and silver stars for his efforts
in action, and was wounded
twice while serving in the Euro-
pean and Pacific theaters of
operation.
