221 Pints of Blood
Given Through JWV

O

Top entertainers appeared
at the Jewish War Veterans'
Armistice Day blood rally on
Sunday at the JWV Memorial
Home. Willie Shore and Jose-
phine Baker were among
those who headlined an all-
star cast which • entertained
the donors.
The affair resulted in a
record-breaking total of 221
pints of blood contributed
during the course of the
afternoon. According to Red
Cross officials on the scene,
this figure established a new
high for civilian contribu-
tions to the Red Cross mobile
blood unit.

BECAUSE OF

A last minute
commitment to appear on the
Talullah Bankhead radio show,
Sophie Tucker was unable to be
with the local Jewish War Vet-
erans at their huge blood rally,
last Sunday . . In a telegram
to Norm Wachler, chairman of
the affair, Sophie expressed her
regrets and gave JWV and the
blood donors a terrific boost in
their efforts on behalf of the
fighting men in Korea . . . There
is a pleasant sequel to this story
.. Willie Shore, top , entertainer
and comic who was performing
at the Elmwood . . . but whose
schedule would have taken him
out of town before the blood
rally . . . heard about the prob-
lem . . . a real trouper and
patriot, Willie, who is himself a
member of JWV, revised his own
plans and agreed to be with the
vets for this very important
event.

THE USUALLY WELL-
DRESSED Ben Fader was an-
swering a lot of questions, last
week, as to why he was wearing
the same identical clothes for
straight days . and the happy-
go-lucky Ben was serious in his
reply, "It's all I've got!" . . . All
his clothes, except those on his
back, were stolen from a station
wagon during his process of
moving to another living site
. . . "It's a good thing it didn't
happen- during the summer,"
quipped Ben. "I sure would have
looked funny walking around
downtown in. my 'bathing
trunks!"

RABBI ABRAHAM KAHANE-
MAN of Bnai Berak, _Israel, is
in Detroit following in the foot-
steps of his illustrious father,
Rabbi Joseph Kahaneman, one
of the _great scholars of our day
. . through whose efforts, a
complete city, Avoth Batei, has
been built for refugee children
. . • with homes, farms, techni-
cal schools, a yeshivah and
many other established centers
of a communal metropolis . .
Leading cities in the U. S. have
erected buildings at Avoth Ba-
tei . . . and the Detroit home
for these children is expected
to be completed in six months
. . . Rabbi A. Kahaneman is here
to raise money for the building.

WHILE HONEYMOONING in
New York, Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Glukrnan (Elaine Rogers) found
a few hours they had to kill . .
and so Hank, who formerly
lived in New York, decided to
show Elaine the Empire State
Bldg. . . . Down to 42nd St. they
went . . . and into a large build-
ing . . . Elaine wasn't impressed
and asked Hank_ if he was sure
they were in the right place ..
it seemed so small . • . Hank
boasted that surely he, an East-
erner, knew the Empire State
Bldg. . . . But Elaine still was
a bit dubious and decided to
ask a watchman in the lobby
.. . who informed her that the
tallest building in the world was
nine blocks down the street! .. .

THE WEATHER MAN has no
say insofar as the Junior Ha-
dassah girls are concerned . . .
Their hayride, Nov. 17, will go
on as planned at Morey's, 2280
Union Lake Rd., if the weather
is okey ... with lots of food and
dancing included ... But if the
winds are as cold as they have
been in their recent raging mo-
ments, the Junior Hadassah
lasses have an indoor wiener
roast with square dancing as a
pretty good substitute. . . .Flor-
ence Graff is the gal to contact
for tickets.

HERMAN_ BERLIN was so en-
grossed in preparation for the
grand opening of the store bear-
ing his name on Dexter, that he
completely forgot about his wife,

Grace, who had been with him
all day and was standing at his

side .. . Finally, she asked him
if there was anything she could
do to help and Herman replied,
"Huh? Oh yes, dear, be by
to pick you up as soon as
finish!"

WHILE SPEAKING at the
Community Planning Confer-
ence luncheon for Israel Bonds,
last Sunday, at the Jewish
Center, Maurice Samuel drew
some laughs when a photogra-
pher attempted to get a picture
of him . . . Interrupting his
speech, Samuel looked _down at
the photog. and said, "Okey,
shoot me and let's get this over ,
with!" .
