Orthodox Condemn
`Bagels and Yox' Show
NEW YORK, (AJP)—An up-
rising against so-called "inde-
cent" Yiddish - American shows
on Broadway is underway with
Orthodox bodies receiving assur-
ances from three religious insti-
tutions that future fund-raising
projects will not include the sale
of tickets for the performances.
The move was coupled with a
disclosure that a local branch of
Agudath Israel had convinced
directors of a borough Yeshiva
to stop selling tickets to the
performances of a Broadway
Yiddish musical. The Yeshiva
went on record in a resolution
outlawing any such projects in
the future.
Under attack from units of
Agudath Israel here w a s the
show "Bagels and Yox," which
was' described as "a low type of
entertainment" by a Brooklyn
religious leader, David Milstein.
An ' attempt by t w o Jewish
comedians to rattle off Lincoln's
Gettysburg Address in Yiddish
as part of the entertainment at
an Al Jolson "Rememberance'
Night"- here drew fire as "taste-
less" and "a departure f r o m
good taste."
Scolded for their manner of
presentation were comics Joey
Adams and double-talk artist
Al Kelly, one-time Willie How-
ard partner. Variety, famed
