Mrs. Leah Zdanowitsch, 65-
year-old DP, scoffs at the old
saying that oppOrtunity knocks
but once: Mrs. Zdanowitsch's
arrival in the,-
United States
through the
auspices of
H IA S, the He-
brew immigrant:
Aid Society,
proved that op-
portunity cameo
a second ti m
Mrs.
for her. F or t y
years ago she Zdanowitsch
turned down the chance to come
to America, choosing to remain
in Poland, where she subse-
quently lost most of her family
at the hands of the Nazis. When
HIAS located her two sisters in
New York after the war, Mrs.
Zdanowitsch seized her second
chance to immigrate.

Loans in the amount of $3,190,000 have, been granted from the
first proceeds of the $500,000,000 State of Israel Bond drive for
the construction of irrigation works to cover an area of 30,000
dunams. The expansion of irrigation, which will increase the area
under cultivation, will thus make possible the greater production
of the country, Funds made available by the Israel Independence
Bond Issue are being used to expand the industrial and agricul-
tural output of Israel and to place the hundreds of thousands of
newcomers to the country in productive employment.

Neighbors Object to
New Mikvah in Newark

NEWARK, (JTA) - The com-
munity relations committee of
the Jewish Community Council
of Essex County intervened in a
dispute over i -Ins to erect a
mikvah, or Jewish ritual bath,
in Newark.
The dispute arose when neigh-
borhood residents and property
owners protested against plans
of the Essex County Ritualari-
um,Synagogue to convert a one-
family house in Newark. Per-
mission had been received from
the municipal zoning officer but
the neighbors protested to the
city Board of Adjustment that
the'proposed mikvah would vio-
late municipal zoning laws. The
question was heatedly argued at
two meetings of the Board which
postponed the decision on the
central' issue whether the _pro-
jected- mikvah is a "church"
and thus, according to law,
needing no zoning exception.
The community relations corn-
rnittee is seeking to bring about
a meeting between the syna-
gogue group and the objectors
to settle the matter without
"further public airing of this
controversy?:

Israel to Ask More
Grant-in-Aid from U.S.

JERUSALEM (JTA) --Israel will
ask, in the next few days, for a
new aid grant from the United
States ,Government, Foreign
Minister Moshe Sharett an-
nounced in the Israel Parlia-
ment.
The Israel Minister paid tri-
bute to President Truman and
leaders of both major political
Parties in the U.•. who made
possible the $6§,000,000 in grants
for Israel included in the re-
cently passed U.S. foreign aid
program. He declared that these
grants are of -"considerable
help" in Israel's current diffi-
cult economic situation, and
that they will improve the
financial condition of the coun-
try.
Outlining Israel's stand on the
question of establishing a Middle
East command, Mr. Sharett em-
phasized that the Western
Powers have not invited • the
Jewish state to participate in
such a command, but merely in-
formed her • of their plans to es-
tablish it. No Middle East com-
mand has been established as
yet, he assured the deputies.

NATIONAL --DIABETES WEEK

sons who may have diabetes
without knowing they have it..

Pro-Red Label on Loeb
Delays 'Goldberg' Show

NEW YORK, (AJP)-Inability
of the "Goldbergs" to land a
new sponsor despite its excellent
drawing appeal is attributed to
a "silent conspiracy" against the
program as a result of •pro-Red
charges against one of its cast.
Failure to ,land a sponsor, it
was learned, may cause NBC-TV
to hold off the video adventures
of the Bronx Jewish family un-
til early next year. A new show
starring Enzio Pinza filled the
original Friday evening spot set
aside for the "Goldbergs" by • the
network.
Show circles attributed the
cold shoulder given the show to
the recent listing in "Red Chan-
.1-leis" of Phil Loeb as an alleged
pro-Communist. Loeb, who
played the role of "Jake," has
since left the Gertrude Berg
cast.

Raphael Cheered by Tunisian
Jews Hoping to Emigrate

TUNIS, (JTA) - Yitzhak
Raphael, head of the Jewish
Agency's immigration depart-
m.ent, received an enthusiastic
welcome at a number of meet-
ings of Tunisian Jews.
At one such public meeting
10,000 Tunisian Jews attended to
demonstrate their "solidarity
with Zionism and their- desire
to immigrate." At another meet-
ing, attended by thousands of
local Jewish youths Raphael ex-
plained the need for pioneering
immigration and the ' training
of pioneers in technical skills.
He also attended a meeting of
Jewish communal leaders at
which the position of Nor t h
African Jews was discussed.
