Allied Jewish C. mpaign Launches Collection Drive

Funds Sought at Once for
Overseas Emergency Needs

In order to make funds avail-
able for the emergency needs of
the United Jewish Appeal and
for other beneficiaries that look
to the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion for support, all divisions of
the Allied Jewish Campaign will
devote their energies during the
next month to a full-scale col-
lection drive.
Harvey H. Goldman, as presi-
dent of the Detroit Service
Group, urged conscientious cam-
paign workers to follow the lead
of many other members of trade
and professional divisions by
volunteering to work on collec-
tions.
Daniel A. Laven is heading
collections for the real estate
and building di-
vision, while
Louis C. Blum-
b e r g, services,
and Arthur
Robinson, arts
and crafts, have
collection activ-
ities underway
in their respec-
tive divisions.

Working with Laven on cover-
ing assignments are Harry C.
Davidson, Irving Granzel, Ben-
jamin Smith, Maurice M. Robin-
son and Chester Schwartz. In
Division C, Mechanical Trades,
veteran workers include Alfred
Berkowitz, Mitchell Feldman,
Albert Fruman, William P.
Greenberg, Benjamin Laikin and
Louis Vineberg. In the Profes-
sional group, Dr. Robert Moss,
Arthur S. Purdy and Harry Ber-
lin have plans underway in their
sections.
For the Women's Division, Mrs.
William B. Isenberg is serving as
chairman of collections. Plans
are developing which seem to in-
dicate that the Women's Divi-
sion will hold a one-day collec-
tion drive in mid-November.
Junior Division plans are pro-
gressing along similar lines. Ir-
win T. Holtzman of the Com-
munity Service Committee will
chair the junior collection ef-
forts. Members of his committee
include Allen Bobroff, Grahm
Landau, Seymour Lichter, Myron
Milgrorn, Nate Peterman and
Richard Prince.

"Be Your Own Talent Scout"
is the keynote of a mailing this
week to the 14,000 members of
the Women's Division of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, urg-
ing women to bring out their
own hidden talents and put
them to work on one of the
Division's year-round commit-
tees.
Mrs. John C. Hopp, president
of the Women's Division, hoped
that every Division member
would seriously ask herself the
questions that the pamphlet
raises: Would you like to get
out of the house more? Do
something useful? Widen your
interests? Meet new people?
"Any member can accomplish
these things and help build a
better community by signing up
now for a committee job with
the Women's Division," Mrs.
Hopp stressed.
"Everyone has some skill she
can add to the Women's Divi-
sion program that helps to make
it reflective of every kind of
viewpoint and every kind of per-
son," the pamphlet goes on to
point out.
Women's Division members
may put their talents to work
on any one of the following 12
committees: Committee on corn-
mittees, p r o g r a m, education,
speakers, publicity, office, re-
search, collection, promotion, ar-
rangements, food and personnel.

It is good to recall these details of the battle for life and jus-
tice and freedom, and all of us should feel indebted to Carlson for
having written his new book. If we were not reminded, the story
might be forgotten—all too soon. And history must keep in view
the heroism of the 250 who held out against the Jordan Legion
led by the British who then so cruelly betrayed the Jews, and
against several other Arab nations. But—writes Carlson—he later
learned that there were only 40 of the Haganah who fought
against Jordan to hold the Old City of Jerusalem, "the others be-
ing shopkeepers and students turned emergency fighters." And in
a footnote, Carlson states: They (the prisoners) were eventually

trucked away to a prisoner-of-war camp, under International Red

Cross supervision, at Mafrak, Jordan. Disappointed in the capture

of such a small group of Haganah, Jordan officials took-along
civilians to make a more impressive showing of the Jewish re-
sistance."

This is the story of the resistance, told by an eye-witness. Only
the Maccabees and Bar Kochba's army battled so heroically.
From Cairo to Damascus, Carlson found filth and ignorance
and bitter hatred. Only in Israel did he learn that cleanliness
still is a people's code, that a sense of justice lives, that people
pressed to the wall fought for their lives like men.
But in the Christian Century Magazine and in a few other
isolated periodicals, some foolish writers still speak of interna-
tionalizing all of Jerusalem—including the Old City. Does' any
one believe that Jews who bled for Jerusalem the New will aban-
don it merely because the Vatican wants it, or because Russia
might desire a strategic plan, under guise of protecting the Orth-
odox Christians?
Carlson told a great story. He is a good reporter who had the
good fortune of seeing things as they are in Arab lands and final-
ly in Israel. He also is a lecturer. Perhaps Detroiters will bring
him here again to tell the story of the struggle in the Middle East
and Israel's triumph against overwhelming odds..

Middle East Tension

The present tense situation in the Middle East is causing a.
lot of concern not only to Britain and the United States, but also
to Israel . . Israelis fear that the Western Powers may try to
appease Egypt by bringing pressure upon Israel to make major
concessions to the Arab countries without any real quid pro quo
. . .Some Israelis also fear that should Egypt really succeed in
ousting the British from the Suez Canal area, without any pun-
ishment on the part of the Western Powers, she will then turn to
Israel • . Drunk with, the success of breaking the Suez agree-
ment with England, Egypt may also break the armistice pact with.
Israel . In this connection it must not be forgotten that Egypt
is still disobeying the recent order of the United Nations security
Council to lift the Suez ban against Israeli-bound traffic .
There was a time when Britain, foreseeing that she might have
trouble with Egypt, was planning to build a new canal from the
Mediterranean to the Red Sea through the Negev . , This was
when Palestine was still British-mandated territory . . . The plan
provided that the new canal should not pass Egyptian territory,
but should stretch from the port of Gaza to Eilat all the way
through Palestine territory , . This is why the Egyptians rushed.
to occupy Gaza immediately after the Arab-Israel war broke out
