LONDON—The British government does not intend to
appease Egypt at the expense of Israel, the London Times
stated Tuesday. The paper emphasized that until Israel's dif-
ferences with the Arab countries are composed the Jewish
state will not be admitted into the New Defense organization
now being planned for the Middle East by the big powers.

"Fear has been widely expressed-in Israel that the four pow-
ers might be ready to go a long way to appease Egypt, but this
view seems to be losing ground as the news from the Suez Canal
zone grows more serious," the Times said.
Declaring that it is more and more felt in London that the
Egyptian government, whatever its real intentions are, may be
overplaying its hand and may drive the big powers to go ahead
with their plans without paying any more attention to the
Egyptian national susceptibilities, the Times declares: "If this
happens, many of Israel's immediate anxieties would disappear
even though she herself may not be invited to join the Middle
East defense organization."
The article emphasizes that it is the hope of the big powers
to bring in both Israel and the Arab countries to the Middle
Eastern defense project at a later stage, but at present it is im-
possible to set up an organization for a defense in the Middle
East to include both sides in the Palestine dispute, "as long as
the breach between them remains."

The passage by the U.S. Congress last Saturday evening of
the Mutual Security Appropriation Bill, which includes about
$65,000,000 in grants for Israel, has partly checked the "wave
of alarm over foreign currency problems which is now sweeping
Israel," the London Times reports from Tel Aviv.

New Israel Labor Merger Identified with Mapai

TEL AVIV—Twenty-five thousand farming veterans and
youths from all corners of Israel attended Monday night the
closing stages of the foundation conference of "Ihud Hakevutzot
Vehakibbutzim" which merges the existing Hever Hakevutzot and
a number of settlements which recently split from Ma.pam-con-
trolled Kibbutz Hameuchacl, The new merger identifies itself
with Mapai, creating therefore two definite Kibbutz blocs—one
patronized by Mapai, the other by Mapam.
Premier Ben-Gurion, who was thunderously cheered when
taking his seat among all Mapai Cabinet members and Jewish
agency leaders, reviewed the importance of collective farming
for the country's economy and defense. He said the new merger
must show greater readiness to absorb larger numbers of new
immigrants, emphasizing the imperative necessity to train 60,000
youths for farming and security in the next four years.
United States Ambassador Monnet B. Davis on Monday de-
clared here that Israel will receive generous American support
for. its economic development which he described as prerequisite
to ,political stability essential for peace.
