Egypt Fears Israel More Than
Russia, Egyptian Minister Says

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Egyp-
tian Foreign Minister Saleh Ed-
Din Pasha told the U. S. News
and World Report, that the
Egyptian government is "not as
concerned about the supposed
threat to Egypt from Russia,
which seems more distant to us
than the existing occupation of
our soil by Britain and the im-
mediate threat by Israel." He
said this in an interview out-
lining Egypt's reasons for de-
manding the removal of British
troops from the Suez Canal zone.
"After -all," said the Egyptian
Minister, "the Israelis talk quite
freely of building an empire
from the Euphrates to the Nile.
How do you expect us to remain
indifferent as long as you permit
such people to ignore the deci-
sions of the United Nations and
to do what they please?"
Saleh Pasha said Egypt would
not co-operate with the West in
a regional defense pact unless
the West changed its attitude
toward Israel. Asked about the
possibility of an understanding
between Israel and the Arab
states, he replied:

Mestrovic Denies
Link with Nazis

SYRACUSE, N.Y., (JTA)—Ivan
Mestrovic, sculptor, who has
been chosen to work on the
American Memorial to Six Mil-
lion Jews murdered -by t h e
Nazis, has issued a statement
denying any connection with
the Nazis and stating that he
had no hand in statements by
Goering and Goebbels that his
work was a fine example of
Aryan art.
Mr. Mestrovic declared that he
was in fact anti-Nazi and re-
fuSed to attend the opening in
1935 of an exhibit of his works
in Berlin—organized without his
assistance — because Hitler was
scheduled to attend . the cere-
mony. He also refused to sell a
bust of Goethe which he created
to the Yugoslav Government
when he learned that it was in-
tended as a gift to Hitler, the
sculptor said. As a consequence,
he was imprisoned for four and
one-half months as an enemy of
the Nazis when Yugoslavia fell.

UAW to Dedicate Dr. Jacoby Criticizes UN Commission's
Building on Oct. 26 Definition of National Minorities

"Let us put it this way: some-
body comes into your house and
settles down in a room—unin-
vited, unwanted. Some strong.
people say you must keep him
in your house. But they cannot
force you to / be friends- with the
man who has moved into your
house and driven you out of part
of it. We do have an armistice
with Israel. That is practical
peace, but not peace with Israel
in the sense of accepting their
unwanted pr esence in our
house."

World Congress
Strengthens JNF

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The JNF
has emerged from the Zionist
Congress in Jerusalem, stronger
and more important in the up-
building of Israel, Dr. Harris_ J.
J. Levine, president of the Jew-
ish National Fund of America,
declared at a meeting of the
JNF board of directors at the
Commodore Hotel, called specif-
ically to receive a report on the
proceedings of the Zionist Con-
gress as they affect the JNF.
Dr. Levine explained that the
only change introduced by the
resolutions adopted by the Con-
gress with respect to Zionist
funds is the followiiig:
"Whereas heretofore the JNF
share in the United Palestine
Appeal proceeds was turned over
directly to the Jewish National
Fund of America for transmis-
sion to the JNF in Jerusalem,
henceforth all proceeds of UPA
will go through Keren Hayesod
to the Jewish Agency, with the
understanding that the JNF re-
ceive an adequate allocation
from the campaign funds, to be
fixed by the Zionist Actions
Committee.

Anti-Jewish Sign --Nailed
To Miami Jewish Center

MIAMI (AJP)' — A sign cap-
tioned "Deutschland Uber Alles,"
and threatening American Jews
with the fate of German Jew-
ry was found at the door of a
Jewish Center which was dyna-
mited four montlis ago. Both
atrocities were attributed to the
Ku Klux Klan by the Jewish
Floridian,' local English-Jewish
weekly.
The explosion delayed com-
pletion of the Tifieretb Israel
Center last June, but failed to
seriously damage the structure.
The sign was found nailed to a
three-foot cross. Its vile attack
was written in German,, assailed
the "damned Jews and dirty
Negroes" and hailed the KKK
and Hitler.

Preliminary plans have been
completed for a special convoca-
tion of leaders of American Lib-
eral Judaism for the weekend of
Oct. 26 to 28, it was announced
by Louis Broido, general chair-
man. The convocation will be
held in connection with the
dedication of the new national
headquitrters of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations,
the Union House of Living Juda-
ism, Fifth Ave. and E. 65th St.,
in New York.
Construction of the new re-
ligious center was made possible
by an extraordinary gift by the
late Dr. Albert A. Berg made in
the name of his parents, and
by funds raised by the National
Federation of Temple Sister-
hoods. The building will be
known as the Unidn House of
Living Judaism, the Moritz and

Writer Says Will of
People Rules the UN

UNITED • NATIONS, N.
(JTA)—A definition o_f national
minorities who should get United
Nations protection was adopted
here by the UN Sub-Commission
on Prevention of Discrimina-
tion and Protection of Minori-
ties. The definition, approved by
10 votes against two — Soviet
Union and Poland—stipulates:
"A. The term minority in-
cludes only those non-dominant
groups in a population which
posses and wish to preserve
stable ethnic, religious or lin-
guistic traditions or characteris-
tics markedly different from
those of the rest of the popu-
lation B. Such minorities should
properly include a number of
persons sufficient by themselves
to preserve such characteristics;
C. Such minorities must be loyal
to the state of which they - are
nationals."

Israel-Lutheran Pact
Over
Church Property
NEW YORK—It is the will of

peoples and their leaders that
dictates how the United Nations
works, Peter Kihss, UN corre-
spondent for the New York Her-
ald Tribune, declared recently in
a pamphlet published by the
Foreign Policy Association.
"The UN's chief needs are
thought and action. The UN's
chief faults are delay and in-
ertia," Mr. Kihss asserted. -"The
UN has shown by its' actions
that it can stretch its Charter to
do anything the member na-
tions wish. The UN has also
shown - that its members can
find far too many excuses fbr
doing nothing." .
Answering a series of ques-
tions about the United Nations,
Mr. Kihss expressed the opinion
that the continued presence of
the Soviet Union in the inter-
national organization provides
an opportunity for future nego-
tiation. •
"The Soviet Union's constant
effort to blame others for what
it .calls vong UN actions—in
the Russilan proverb, 'to shift
the blame from the head of Ahe
sick person to the head of the
healthy one'—indicates the Rus-
sian people have faith in the
UN ideal and would have to be
convinced otherwise by their
government," he said.

Jewish Groups Blast
Filibuster as Totalitarian

WASHINGTON, D. C., (JTA)
—Representatives of major Jew-
ish organizations recently testi-
fied against Senate filibusters at
the Senate Committee on Rules

Speaking -on behalf of the
American Jewish Committee and
the Synagogue Council of
America, Irving M. Engel of
New, York said that the two
groups favored the curbing of
the filibuster and the installation
instead of a reasonable closure
rule. Will Maslow, testifying on
behalf of the ,Arnerican Jewish
Congress, expressed the same
view.
