"Do Lobbies Endanger Demo-
cratic Government?" was the
topic of a debate presented to
Central students Oct. 11. The
debate, scheduled for broadcast
over WJR in cooperation with
the Junior Town Meeting of the
Air, was taped for the rebroad-
cast. The affirmative team of
Judy Silverman and Sanford
Lakin was opposed by Wallace
Handler and Beverly Stein. Mr.
Milan helped with the arrange-
ments.
As a result of a slight error at
the end of last semester, the
office of vice-president of the
Student Council was left open.
To fill this vacancy, a campaign
was waged among members of
the Council. Roger Pernick
emerged victorious in the elec-
tions held Oct. 4. Other officers
are Sally Kornwise, president;
Toby Davidson, secretary; and
Geraldine Primack, treasurer.
The conscientious efforts of
Max B. Jaslow, one of Central's
English teachers, have been
duly acclaimed by Estelle Plaf-
kin and Manuel Merton, two
of his ex-pupils, who initiated
a petition, commending his
methods of teaching, among
his former students at Wayne
and sent it to Arthur Don-
dineau, Superi ntendent of
Schools. The petition, which
contained 60 signatures, said
in part, "Mr. Jaslow seeks to
free the mind of the student
from prejudice, and instill in
him a love of truth."
The Science Club is about to
lose a valuable member. Janet
Katz, president, is moving to
Portland, Ore., next week. Larry
Frohman, secretary, will act as
president pro-tern. Jack Kirch,
treasurer, will assume the job of
both secretary and treasurer un-
til a new election is held. As an
almost final gesture, Janet acted
as quiz-master at Monday's
meeting and fired questions,
written by herself, Judy Horo-
witz and Larry Frohman. Every-
one who knows Janet will miss
her. All wish her the best of
luck in her new home.
