The game with Wayne was
given added interest when last
week it was announced that
the Kaiser-Frazer Corp. had
contributed as a trophy to be
presented to the winner, the
shovel used by K-F in Israel to
dig the first shovelful of earth
for its assembly plant at Haifa.
The trophy is symbolic in rec-
ognizing Wayne U. as a pioneer
who recognized Brandeis'
future as K-F recognized Is-
rael through- its plant in

the-less, the Judges are coming
to town.
The Judges in this instance
are not attired in long black
robes, but wear the light blue
_and white of Brandeis Univer-
sity. It's the Brandeis Judges
who are making the trek to De-
troit and who, on Oct. 20, will
line up against Wayne Univer-
sity's Tartars in the first game
of a football series.
Coach Bennie Friedman, the
former All-America from the
University of Michigan , will
bring his grid squad here with
three games under his belt,
after dropping the season's
opener to New Hampshire U.,
a strong "little college" team
in the East by only 13 points.
This is Brandeis' first year in
collegiate varsity competition,
having played freshmen teams
last season. Many of Friedman's
players are playing their second
season for the Judges, but most
have been recruited from the
freshmen ranks.
Included on the blue and
white squad is Ramon Gilbert,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Gil-
bert, of 3110 Ewald Circle. Ray
plays tackle and packs a lot of
weight behind his blocking. A
former Central High School grid
star, Ray is a fixture on the
Brandeis team.
In their first season of organ-
ized play; Brandeis has bit off
a large hunk of schedule, play-
ing eight contests. The teams
they play besides Wayne and
New Hampshire are AIC, Bradley,
Rider, Arnold, Hofstra and
Chamberlein. Most are small
schools, but have excellent rec-
ords on the gridiron.
There is. a good amount of
football fever at Brandeis, and
there would have to be for the
team to have entered competi-
tion in a year when 33 college
teams announced that they
have dropped football. .
The team. plays from the split
T-formation, a switch from last
year when Friedman's boys

NEW LUTZKER HALL
Our Letter Box
Kosher Catered Dinner
Editor, The Jewish News •
I was amazed to read in your
September 28th issue of The
Jewish News a statement in the
column "Listening Post" written
by Danny Raskin, taking to
task the Israel Bond organiza-
tion for having a Kosher meal
in connection with the sched-
uled Moshe Sharett Dinner on
September 19 catered by the
Book-Cadillac Hotel.
The facts regarding that din-
ner which Mr. Raskin should
have ascertained are as follows:
1. The Book-Cadillac was se-
lected by a unanimous vote
of the Israel Bond executive
committee as the most suit-
able place to receive a digni-
tary of the standing of
Moshe Sharett.
2. The committee acceded to
the request of the Mizrachi
and its affiliated congrega-
gational groups to serve a
Mosher - _meal, in which all
Detroit Jews would feel free
to participate.
3. The Book-Cadillac does not
permit outside caterers to
use its kitchen. It did con:-
sent, however, to prepare the
dinner under the supervision
of the Orthodox .'Rabbinical
Council and having- dishes
and silver brought in from
outside.
It: is my hope that other
major community . groups will
emulate the fine cooperation of
the Ideal Israel Bond Organiza-
tion in serving kosher meals at
their dinners so that • all ele-
ments in the • community can
attend. .
With all good wishes for a
Very Happy New Year, I re-
