What NOT to Do at Holiday Services' Bawling Infants, Missing Yarmulkes, Whispering- They're Taboo in Shule An American Press Jewish Feature With the High Holidays here, let's look at our congregational manners. The beauty and dignity of worship on this most solemn occasion in the Jewish year can be ruined by thoughtless wor- shippers. Don't be one of them. For instance, e v e r y Jew should be in the synagogue, but that ideal doesn't necessarily in- lude unpredict- able year - old in- fants. A squalling, kicking baby —as cute as he or she might be in the coziness- of the liv- ing room—is a dis- traction that only enemies of the rabbi would wish upon him. Children racing up and down the aisles, thus converting the syna- gogue or temple byways into a speed track hazardous f o r all others, are no credit to parents, either. Two certain ways to delay services have a wide vogue. One .15 to congregate in front of the synagogue. A n - other is to ar- ► t )), rive late and trample a lot of feet before fin- ally getting seated. Some- times, it isn't possible to avoid being tardy but what's the ex- , cuse for the other breach of de- corum? Now for the matter of clothes. Every congregant wants to look nice at services. It's both natural and ad- mirable, but there is such a thing as over- dressing, a point for the mindful women to pon- der• Why make your friends re- sentful? And a memo to the younger genera- tion: deposit the bubble gum at home—not on the synagogue bench. In other words,_ don't chew at services. In a majority of American synagogues, the head must be covered. Try to remember to bring your own yarmulke. The . poor, hurried shamos has plenty to do wtihout hunting up a skull cap for you. Once you are in the house of worship, keep your greetings to friends confined to a cheerful nod and a smile. A great big loud and resounding "Hello, how are you?" is fine—a f t e r services are over and you and your friends have left the syn- agogue or temple. Of course, talking, whisper- ing or applause are totally out of place during services. You wouldn't do such things, of course, but some of your fel- low-worshippers do. Maybe they'll read this. Most important of all is your obligation to follow the services closely. Worship is a coopera- tive procedure, in which the rabbi and canton- jointly parti- cipate with the congregation. Naturally you can't keep your place if your attention is wan- dering. Prayers during the New Year services have been a vital part of the bonds which have kept Harlan, Pro-Nazi Producer Readies New Motion Film NEW YORK (AJP) —Veit Har- lan, who is being boycotted in Munich because he directed an anti-Semitic film for Hitler, is making a new film in another German City. . Harlan, twice charged with crimes against humanity and twice acquitted by de-nazifica- tion courts, moved to Goettin- gen, Germany, for the new pic- ture when he was denied facil- ities in Munich. His first post-war film, "Undy- ing Lover," was greeted by riots and demonstrations, in which Jewish demonstrators were se- verely injured.
