Founding of a Town AARON LEVY: Founder of Aaron3burg. By Sidney M. Fish, PH.D., New York, American Jewish Historical Society. JCRS Fulfills Chance To Thank Tolstoy DENVER (AJP)—The quiet arrival of a Russian Greek Or- thodox immigrant woman pa- tient to the Jewish Consump- tives' Relief Society here brought a comment of "poetic justice" from Charles Miller, manager of the New York office of the JCRS. The woman's entrance was spon- sored by the daughter of the late- Count Tolstoy. Tolstoy's daughter, Elizabeth Reviewed by Dr. Bertram W. Korn, Philadelphia, Pa. Workers in the field of Ameri- can Jewish history have known for some years of the eXhaus- tive research which Dr. Sidney M. Fish has been doing in the background of the early Jews of Philadelphia and of Penn- sylvania. It takes an inordi- nately long time to go th rough the extensive collections in his- • torical societies and the still • More voluminous records of City, County and State Courts • and Departments. Students of history are, however, well train- • ed in the virtue of patience, and the patience has finally been rewarded in the case of Dr. Fish. • The first of what promises to • • be a long series of monographs and books has finally come from • • his pen. This one deals with that great American Jewish • merchant and real estate opera- • tor and developer, Aaron Levy (1742-1815), who finally made headlines all over the United States last year when the town which he founded and which is called by his name — Aarons- burg, Pa.—celebrated the 150th anniversary both of its founding and of the gift of land which he made for the. establishment of the town's first house of wor- ship, a Lutheran church. Dr. Fish has delved far afield, and very deep, indeed_to turn up every possible fact and 'epi- sode which might cast light on Aaron Levy's origins and his life, work and influence. He has made the remarkable . discovery, for instance, of an ethical will, written in Amsteram, in 1795, by Aaron Levy's brother, Moses Ha-yyirn, which casts interesting light on the learned Jewish background of the entire fam- ily. From tax lists, real. estate surveys, militia pay rolls, and many other varying types of documents of the period, Dr. Fish pieces together the rest, of the story, and . especially • the record of Aaron Levy's vast dealings in Pennsylvania real estate, which actually made him one of the Founding Fathers of many a town and area in cen- tral and western Pennsylvania. Tomashevsky, who manages the Tolstoy Foundation, Inc., of New York, appealed to Miller for a haven for Lidia Wasiliewna, Swititsch, 60-year-old refugee from Russian Communism. "It's poetic justice," said Mil- ler, "that • the Jewish people, through their great sanatorium in Denver, should repay Count Tolstoy for his defense of Rus- sian Jewry during the Czarist pogroms." — Manufacturer of RUBY-BEE PURE PRESERVES DETROIT 11, MICH. 1951 E.
