self and went to the clubhouse
where the communal leaders
were enjoying a game of cards.
Seeing the great rabbi enter,
the players made an attempt
to hide their cards.
"Keep playing," shouted the
rabbi, and he sat by them un-
til they finished and then ap-
propriated the winnings for
the widow's rent.

Is Gambling in the Bible?

tolerant one. One evening, a
widow came to Rabbi Akiba
Eager of Prague lamenting
that on the morrow she would
be evicted from her home. She
could not pay the rent.
Rabbi Eager immediately
left for the offices of Kehilla
in Prague to raise the rent, but
on arriving there he found it
deserted. He bethought him-

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

I do not think gambling as
such is mentioned in the Bible.
The Book of Samuel does refer
to a practice of the young in
competitive target shooting with
bow and arrow. I don't know
whether there wen any bookies
around taking bet on whether
Reuben or - SiM07 would win.
Maybe they were 'ike the story
told of Bernard F ,ruch. He was
once asked whet' .er he was in-
terested in racirr . "Yes," he re-
plied, "I am i• erested in the
human race."
Maybe the ( trly Jews were
more interester in the human
race. I suppc e in a society
where everyon has his tract of
ground and Is self-sufficient
there isn't th .• urge to make a
quick „killing -,o gain a fortune
overnight. T7 .ere is no need for
it. Security assured.
By the ti ie of the Talmud,
when the ec )nomic pattern had
become mor distorted and com-
plex and much of the early
equality had vanished, gambling
had come into being.
Card playing among the
Jews of Spain apparently en-
joyed quite a vogue. By a
strange freak of history, it
also took on a religious sig-
nificance. The Marranos' fre-
quently brought cards along
with their Bibles and prayer
books to their places of wor-
shop. If the agents of the In-
quisition were seen approach-
ing, the Jews would quickly
close their prayer books and
begin playing cards.
But apparently there were
many Sephardic Jews who used
cards for other purposes than to
shield them in the observance
of their faith. Indeed- one of
the most famous Jewish schol-
ars, a rabbi and poet as well,
Leos} of Modena, was well known
as a gambler. He was the type;
of man to whom gambling is a
disease.
He knew all the arguments
against it. As a matter of fact,
as a young man in his teens, he
had • written a tract against
gambling which was something
of an international best seller.
It was translated into Spanish,.
French and German. He wrote
first-rate Hebrew poetry and
composed first -rate Biblical
commentaries, but every now
and then the gambling fever
would seize him—and like a
drunk and his bottle he would
flee to his cards. He was brought
to financial ruin by his gambling
and, finally, was excommunicat-
ed by the Jewish community.
But he wrote a learned religious
essay proving by Jewish law that
they had no right to pronounce
the ban on him and the excom-
munication was rescinded.
In general, I think, the Jew-
ish attitude toward gambling
per se has been a mellow and
