Facts You Should Know

Why is it customary to dip one's bread in
salt after reciting the blessing over it?
The Bible (Leviticus 2:13) commands that
salt be offered with every sacrifice at the Altar
in the Temple. The commentaries explain this
by saying that salt is a preservative. It there-
fore typifies that which is abiding and everlast-
ing. A sacrifice indicates a covenant with the
Almighty. The Bible (Numbers 18:19) refers to
an everlasting covenant as an "everlasting cove-
n ont with salt." The Jewish home was supposed
to be the reflection of the Holy Temple. The
Jewish table therefore assumes the rule of the
Altar. The food which we eat upon that table
would then take the place of the sacrifices upon
the Altar.

Why is the Torah (Holy Scroll) read in the
synagogue twice on the Sabbath, once in the
morning and once in the afternoon?
This is one of the 10 decrees issued by Ezra
the Scribe mentioned in the Talmud (Tractate
Baba Kama 82a). The Talmud itself gives the
reason by saying that it is because of the mer-
chants "that sit at the corners." These people
have no chance to come to the synagogue on
Mondays and Thursdays when the Scroll is
read, and so it is read an extra time on the
Sabbath so that they may hear the reading of
the Scroll more than once a week. Some claim
that this decree also helped those who failed to
attend the morning service. The Sabbath is the
day of holiness and the day to be devoted to
learning and study of the Law. Thus the Scroll
is read twice on that day showing our devotion
to the Law and our desire to
to its reading as possible. have as many listen

Why is the Scroll read on. Mondays and
Thursdays in the synagogue?
This is another of Ezra's 10 decrees which
the Talmud explains by saying that in such a
way no three days would pass without the Torah
being read to the people of Israel. Also, these
are the two days on which Moses ascended and
descended Mount Sinai, This indicates that we
are still following in the footsteps of the original
law-giver, since all of us were supposed to have
been at Sinai in spirit.

If Travelling is prohibited on the Sabbath,
why is it permissable to travel on board ship on
the Sabbath?
Travelling on a ship on the Sabbath is only
permitted when the traveller boarded the ship
prior to the oncoming of the Sabbath and estab-
lished a sort of residence there. This would
therefore not constitute travelling but rather
residence in a floating home. Actually a voyage
