On Yom Kippur in 1944, for
the first time in 14 years, Jews
were able to pray before the
Wailing Wall in the old city of
Jerusalem without interference
from the British Mandatory rul-
ers, thanks to a carefully-organ-
ized plan of psychological war-
fare.
The story of the underground
plan has been revealed by Men-
ahem Begin, former commander
of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, in his
book, "The Revolt, Story of the
Irgun," published by Henry
•Schuman, Inc.
The dispute over the Wailing
Wall and the Old City was one
of the many points of bitter de-
bate between the British and
the Jews. The British set up one
of their many inquiry commis-
sions and on the basis of the
commission's report, issued an
order in 1929 that Moslems had
the sole right to ownership and
possession of the Wailing Wall,
as well as the right of owner-
ship to the adjacent courtyard
and the area overlooking the
Wall...Most galling of all was a
stern decree that "Jews are for-
bidden to blow the Shofar at
the Wailing Wall."
A group of Jews decided to ig-
nore the order in 1943, according
to Begin's book. The sun was
setting. The congregation lifted
their voices in the closing

catastrophe of Europe.

and that they would conse-
quently retreat. That the Wail-
ing Wall is sacred is admitted
on all hands, and it was no sim-
ple matter for a Government
which wanted to app'ear 'civil-
ized' to be responsible for a
bloody clash because they wished
to ban the observance of reli-
gious tradition."
Begin emphasizes that there
was no intention to fight if the
British ignored the warning,
since old men, women and chil-
dren might have been hurt, but
it was important that the Brit-
ish be convinced that if they
dared come near the wall "they
would be fired on from every
direction and suffer heavy cas-
ualties:"
What Begin did intend to do
was to attack the British but not
where they expected an attack—
the British police fortresses at
Haifa, Beit-Daj an, Kalkilia and
Katara.

tical plan did not fail. The
fortresses were attacked that
night but not as a punish-
ment for British action at the
Wailing Wall. Our warning
proved effective. The oppress-
or retreated. On the Day of
Atonement in 1944—for the
first time in 14 years—
British police did not come
near the Wailing Wall. They
stood at a distance, and for
greater security, took off their
number tags. The prayer was
not 'interrupted. The great
blast .611, the _Shofar was truly
great. The sounder was no
longer 'illegal.' He did not hide
nor disguise himself. He stood
up _openly and let himself be
heard _through the Shofar—
