Temple Women's Idea to Give Blind
The Story of Hillel with Braille Copy

NEWARK, N.J. (AJP) — If all
goes well with two housewives,
both active members of Temple
Bnai Jeshurun here, the Library
of Congress in Washington will
soon receive the first braille
. copy of a new Jewish book to
be published throughout the
country this week.
When the two women, Mrs.
Alvin Levine, of South Orange,
and Mrs. Bessie Ross of Newark,
learned that their rabbi, Ely E.
Pilchik, w a s completing the
manuscript of the first English
biography of Hillel, they de-
- tided to transcribe it into
braille, thus making it available
to blind readers of all faiths

It is more than likely, Mrs.

The idea for the transcrip-
tion first occurred to Mrs.
Ross, a member of the Temple
board and wife of the presi-
dent of the Reform temple,
Michael L. Ross. Her braille
teacher, Mrs. Levine, thought
the idea "a natural" and im-
mediately sanctioned the pro-
ject.

The transcription of impor-
tant books into braille is not
a new effort for Temple Bnai
Jeshurun women. According to
Mrs. Levine, who was certified
as a braillist by the Library of
Congress more than 20 years
. ago, the braille department of
the Temple, of which she is a
co-chairlady, has been recog-
nized nationally for its out-
standing contribution.
Mrs. Levine herself has tran-
scribed such major works. as
"The Brothers Ashkenazi",
"Three Cities" (by Sholem'
Asch) , and is now engaged in
preparing "A Dreamer's Jour-
ney", the autobiography of the
late Jewish philosopher, Morris
R.. Cohen.
Under the inentorship .of •Mrs.
Levine, Mrs. Ross will do the
actual braille transcription of
"Hillel." She is already scan-
ning an advanced copy, of the
book, made available by the
publishers, Henry Schuman,
Inc., in order to determine how
complicated are the Hebrew let-
ters, the punctuation and the
complexity of word contractions.
Mrs. Ross, who is considered
`an outstanding" braille student,
began studying in March. The
course called for her to take
one lesson a week, but she con-
fesses modestly, "I'm a little
