TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Asserting
that Israel is slowly moving to-
wards economic independence
and gradually becoming the
largest industrial center in the
Middle East, Premier David Ben-
Gurion opened the new Petach
Tikvah plant of the General Tire
Company of Akron, 0.
Built through the joint efforts
of the American firm and Israeli
businessmen, the plant is ex-
pected to turn out 2,500 tons of
rubber tires and tubes annually,
making Israel self-sufficient in
these commodities.
The new plant will begin pro-
duction around April next year.
In addition to providing Israel
with all its tube and tire needs,
20 percent of its production will
be exported.

Barkley Substitutes for .
Sharett at Dinner Here

Israel Foreign Minister Moshe
Sharett was prevented, at the
last moment, by illness, from
coming to Detroit for the Bonds
for Israel dinner, on Wednes-
day evening.
Substituting for him, U. S.
Vice-President Alben W. Bark-
ley consented to come here to
address the gathering of More
than 300 at Hotel Statler.

It is expected that the bond
purchases at Wednesday's din-
ner and increasing interest in
thd drive will spur greater ef-
fort for the local drive. A report
of Wednesday's dinner will ap-
pear in next week's Jewish News.
