BOSTON, (JTA)—Vice Presi-
dent Alben W., Barkley told
1,000 New England leaders of the
United Jewish Appeal here that
"Israel, a sister democracy of
the United States, whose mes-
sage of f r e e do m. rings out
throughout the Middle East, is
confronted with a critical sit-
uation arising out of the tidal
waves of immigration engulfing
its shores."
In a plea for maximum sup-
port of the special $35,000,000
drive launched by the UJA,
the Vice President urged the
American people "to advance
the cause of democracy and
strengthen the bulwark of free-
dom that is Israel by supporting
with generosity, and even with
sacrifice, the current campaign
of the United Jewish Appeal."
Checks and commitments to
the total of $1,122,000 were pre-
sented to Barkley by the con-
ference which adopted measures
to speed local drives and pledged
support of the extraordinary na-
tion-wide campaign.

,

Bonds are pretty much alike physically. They are made of paper and they are
printed' with ink.
But when a bond is made of courage and signed with bkiod, it deserves special

attention. Like the Bonds now being offered in this country by the State of Israel.
For' these Bonds bear the spiritual imprint left by heroic people—a people who,
for centuries, knowingly embraced death so that Israel might some day Jive.
Today, Israel lives vigorously, proudly, vibrantly—a country like the United States,
conceived in the passion of liberty. Yet the people of Israel do not want to hug this
freedom to themselves. They want to share it with others—with 600,000 more of their
people, now homeless in other lands.
These 6003000 will. be brought to Israel in the next three years. To absorb them,
the country's industrial enterprises must be expanded. For these incoming thousands
do not want existence as wards of the state. They want a rewarding life as hard-working
members of a freedom-loving community.
And that is what these Bonds of Israel are all about—to help- this valiant nation
make a place iri the sun of liberty for 600,000 more productive people. The kind of
people who already have created in Israel suc' modern and diversified industries as:

A BUILDING MATERIALS INDUSTRY—currently producing window glass,
pre-cast concrete, plywood, electrical products, to name just a few.
A METAL AND CHEMICAL INDUSTRY—based on great deposits of min-
erals, including phosphates, manganese, sulphur; again to name just a few.
A TEXTILE INDUSTRY—now- exporting to Denmark, Sweden,. BelgiuM
and Switzerland.

Every time you invest in a State of Israel Bond, you invest in far mme than a 31/2%
interest-bearing instrument. You invest in sound achievement, in human accomplish-
ment and in the future of democracy. As the world's newest democracy, Israel is
another guarantor of the dignity of man ...and so are its Bonds.
