Wire to The Jewish News JERUSALEM-Dr. Leo Her- mann, general secretary of the Board of Directors of the Keren Hayesod, died suddenly Monday night while visiting friends near Tel Aviv. He was 63. Born in. Czechoslovakia, he joined the Zion- ist movement in his early youth. He studied law at Prague Uni- versity but mov- ed later to Ber- lin where he be- came secretary of the Zionist Actions Corn- mittee. In 1914 Dr. Hermann he assumed editorship of the Juedische Rundschau, leading Zionist newspaper in Germany, and held this post for five years. In 1919 he was appointed gen- eral secretary of the Zionist World Executive and later be- came the secretary general of the Keren Hayesod. He had been residing in Israel since 1926. Dur- ing World War II he was a member of the Middle East Council of UNRRA. He often visited the U. S. iiF the interests of the Keren Hayesod. Dr. Moses Benmosche Dies in N.Y.; Wrote for Detroit Jewish Papers ..•■••11 Dr. Moses Benmosche, promi- nent surgeon and writer, who practiced surgery in Detroit around World War I, died Sept. 4, at his home, 600 W. 111th St., New York, after a brief illness. He was 67. Dr. Benmosche is probably best known by Detroiters as the writer of scholarly verses which appeared in Jewish publications here under the pseudonym of Enoch Mebs. Born in London, Dr. Ben- mosche received his. MD degree from the Medical School of the University of Virginia in 1904. Following two years of teaching at Virginia, he- worked and studied at London's Middlesex University and Hospital where he was appointed assistant in can- cer research. He directed the pathological laboratory of Mobray Hospital, Capetown, South Africa in 1911 arid 1912, and held a similar post in Nashua, N. H. in 1913-14. After practicing g e n e r al surgery in Detroit, he moved to New York in 1920, where he had been a general surgeon and senior in clinical surgery at Mt. Sinai Ifospital. He is the author of "A Surgeon Explains to the Layman,' a widely sold medical text, and "Waifs and Orphans." His poems, articles and book reviews were a regular contribution to The Jewish Forum, a magazine. He served as president of the Forum Association. A chairman of the American Committee of the National Sick Fund of Palestine, ' he was a delegate to the International Congress on tuberculosis in Washington in 1904. He was a member of Knights of Pythias and served as national chairman of ritual and instruction.
