THE KOSHER LABEL is a rare
one among eateries in the com-
munity . . . with hardly a few,
if even that many, given the
authorized right to use the word
. . . Yet, there are many restau-
rants in the city that offer
"Kosher co r n e d beef" sand-
wiches without obstruction . . .
This is a fact that should be
taken up by the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis and the Jewish
Community Colincil . . . else the
word "Kosher" will lose its res-
pected significance.

PRESIDENTS DAY at Tam-o-
Shanter Country Club, last week,
was the kind of affair where "a
good time was had by all" .
Committee member Morrie Ja-
cobs was busy passing out gifts.

HASKELL LAZERE, Michigan
ADL director, drove with his
family to California at the start
of what was to be a pleasant
vacation . . . Enroute, his two-
year-old son, Richard, developed
a fever, was treated by a doctor,
and pronounced fit for the jour-
ney . . . The next casualty was
his daughter, five-year-old Ar-
line, who also began to run a
fever and was taken to a doctor
• . . Haskell thought bad luck
was behind him until his wife,
Claire, became ill . . . Even that
didn't quite end the. jinx ... The
final performer in the hard luck
series was the family dog . . .
who got himself lost when
everything else at long last
seemed to be in order . . • The
dog was retrieved .. Twelve days
after leaving Detroit, the bat-
terd travelers reached their Cal-
ifornia destination . . Wrote
Haskell to his office, "Better I
should have stayed home!"

HOLDING FIRST NUMBER
to be called for participation
in WWJ-TV "Cinderella Week-
End" program, Judy Heyman
told the overflow audience
that the greatest thrill of her
life was her trip to Israel
when she was 15 . . . Judy, now
a sophomore at Wayne Uni--
versity, is the daughter of
Mary Heyman and the late
Samuel Noah Heyman . . .
Her father, a native Jerusal-
emite, came to this country as
a youngster, was an honor stu-
dent at Massachusetts Insti-
tute of Technology and rose to
high rank in the great Fisher
Body and GM organization .
He was recognized as one of
the outstanding engineers in
the middle West . . ; Judy fol-
lows in the footsteps of both
mother and father . . . as a
leader in Young Judea.

COUNCIL CANDIDATES E d
Connor and Jim Inglis appeared
at a few meetings together du-
ring the current campaign . . .
Both of them are known for
their enlightened views on such
hot issues as housing and civil
rights . . . for disregarding the
usual cautions with which can-
didates approach controversial
issues . . . and for a willingness
to express themselves forth-
rightly . . . Morrie Fineman re
ports that at a get-together the
other night, the two were re-
viewing their program tactics
• .. and their ability to be any-
thing other than completely
candid with their audiences .. .
"We've probably cost each other
a good many votes," said Jim
. .. while Ed, a Council incum-
bent, quipped, "Maybe our
watchword should be 'how can-
did can a candidate be'?' "

ALTHOUGH IT HAPPENS of-
ten, it's always pleasant to re-
cord the services that the Jew-
ish War Veterans in our town
carry on for the vets . . . The
latest was a complete show the
other day at the Dearborn Vet-
erans Hospital . . . The Four
Dukes and their entire company
appeared there through arrange-
ments made by the Auxiliary of
the Lawrence Jones Post .
Celia Silverman, an old hand at
service to vets, was in charge of
the undertaking.

WALTER KLEIN, assistant di-
rector of the Jewish Community
Council, likes to tell one about
the Communist leaning forward
toward his single listener who
merely stood there and said no-
thing . . . "Comrade, " he cried,
"you seem to be a man of intel-
ligence. Do you agree with every-
thing I have said?" ... The other
man nodded ... The Communist
seemed startled . . "What's
that?" he asked. "Did you sig-
nify that you agree with every-
thing I say?" . . "Absolutely,"
returned the listener . . . The
Communist stepped down from
his soap box and began to pack
his things . .. "Bah!" he mum-
bled. "What's the sense of talk-
ing to you!"

WHERE TO DINE

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Haj
Amin el Husseini, ex-Mufti of

FREDSON'S DELICATESSEN LUNCHES

5

Jerusalem, is in close contact
with the Soviet Legation in
Cairo and "there is little doubt
that he is taking Communist
money, just as he took Comin-
tern funds as long ago as 1929,"
the magazine Newsweek, charges
in its current issue.
The magazine, in a three-and-
a-half page spread on Husseini,
charges that his sinister figure
stands behind the turmoil in
the Middle East today. It ac-
cuses him of the political as-
sassination of three top figures
in the Arab world, including
King Abdullah of Jordan, and
with inciting nationalist groups
and extreme religious elements
throughout the entire Moslem
world.
The magazine says that "two
close personal associates today
(of the ex-Mufti) are Azzam
Pasha, secretary-general of the
Arab League, who was a con-
fessed Communist for three
years, and the Syrian Marouf
Dawalbi, who is urging the Arab
world to link itself to Moscow in
the battle against Israel and
against "Anglo - American im-
perialism."

Beginning their nineteenth
season, members of the Work-
man's Circle Chorus will meet
at 9 p.m., Monday, at the Roose-
velt School, Linwood at Burlin-
game. Dan Frohman will begin
his 19th year as director.
New members . are invited to
attend, and are informed that
they will be welcomed into the
unit. No special emphasis is
placed on the necessity for
trained voices.
The Circle Chorus, which has
no age limit, has arranged an
interesting program for the
year, including participation
with members of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra in pro-

Menachem Begin, former
Commander of the Irgun Zvai
Leumi underground army in •
Palestine, has written an extra- •
ordinary document, "The Revolt, •
Story of the .Irgun," which Hen-

on Sept. 24.
•
Seeking to dispel what has
amounted to a conspiracy of si- •
lence which has barred all ef-
fective publication of the actual
case of the Irg-un "rebels," Me-
nachem Begin—on whose head •
the British placed a price of •
£10,000—tells for the first time
the inside story of the revolt of
the mysterious Irgun against the
British forces in Palestine.
