`The Communist War on Religion'
Exposed in Gary MacEoin's Book

Soviet persecution of churches
and synagogues is exposed in 1
Gary MacEoin's "The Commu-
nist War on Religion," just.
issued by Devin-Adair Co., (23 E.
26th, NY 10).
It is an impressive collection
Of evidences of an attempt to
stifle freedom of worship and to
exterminate religion, regardless
of faith.
Mr. MacEoin covers in all de-
tails the position of the Jewish
communities in Europe and the
manner in which they have
been affected by the Soviet in-
fluences, especially the countries
in the Russian orbit. It is clear
from his study that there is no
hope for Jews as a religious
group in Soviet Russia and that
conditions are growing worse
with time. •
The decline of the status • of
• Jewry in Czechoslovakia, where
they enjoyed full freedom under
the Masaryks; the persecutions
in Hungary; the story of Ana
Pauker in Romania where Zion --
iSts are treated as reactionary
nationalists; the ban on Zion-
ism in Bulgria and Yugoslavia
and the threatening situation in
Poland—these .are backed up by
facts and figUres. -
The author- tells • how. Ana
Pauker, who was repudiated by
her father who settled-in Israel,
shouted at a public 'meeting,

peace."
Cardinal • Joseph Mindzenty,
who had been attacked in some
quarters as an anti-Semite, is
defended as - •having said that
hatred of Jews "violates the
fundamental law of Christian-
ity; which is . love:" There may

Irishman Appraises,
---and Honors Jewry

Arland Ussher, author of "The
Face and Mind of Ireland," has
made a deep study of the posi-
tion of the Jew in the world. and
his marked frie-ndship for ISrael
is incorporated in his new .:bdok,
"The Magic People: An Irish-
man Appraises the Jews," pub-
lished, by Devin-Adair Co. (23 E.
26th, NY 10).
His sympathetic attitude is
evident in his survey- . of ;Jewish
history, in his -references to the
New Testament, in ..his .analysis
of Jewry's rejection of JeSus. He
points out how astonishing it
can be to affix different labels
on a group, based on a person's
prejudices, and he emphasizes
the qualities he finds in Jews
and the admiration he has ac-
quired for them.
Thus, pointing to the kindli-
ness of Jewish sages and to the
justice of Jewish teachings, Mr.
Ussher declares: "We Christians
have the purest intuitions of
the love that moves the stars,'
but we have also the most ig-
noble accesses of hate or mass
emotion. Of that hate, Jewry
is the logical and inevitable vic-
tim: the race to whom Chris-
tianity owes Jesus—and Judas;
the indispensable Villain. It is
so much easier to hate the sec-
ond of the two than to love the
first; it is so difficult to love
without ending by hating 'the
thing we love'." He concludes by
predicting that "if Europe does
not master her anti-Semitism
she will assuredly perish—like
all the civilizations that have
persecuted Israel."

glorification of General Bor Ko-
rnorowski of Poland, who had
failed to give due credit to
the ,Jewish fighters of the ghet-
to. But in the main the material
in this book represents a power-
ful collection of evidence suffi-
cient to destroy all faith in
Soviet Russia's actions and poli-
cies.
The book ends on a rather
hopeful note. It points out that
the Soviet anti-religious pro-
gram "has not achieved its pur-
pose." Indicating that "while re-
ligion survives, Communism is
insecure," Mr. MacEoin writes
that the Bolsheviks realize that
their plan is succeeding "but
they cannot abandon the at-
tempt because their philosophy
of dialectical materialism obliges
them to destroy religion."

Dr. Philip Birnbaum's
`Holyday Prayer Book'

Dr. Philip Birnbaum, whose
daily, Sabbath and festival pray-
erbooks already have won de-
served commendations for the
skill with which the editor an-
notated them and translated the
prayers into English, has pro-
duced another valuable work in
his series — the "High Holyday
Prayer Book" which has just
been issued by the Hebrew Pub-
lishing Co. (77 Delancey, N.Y.).
At the outset, it is important
to state that Dr. Birnbaum's
work is all-inclusive. While it
adheres to all traditions, it
nevertheless is suitable for Con-
servative as well as Orthodox
congregations. But there are im-
portant deviations from previous
practices in translation to give
the prayer book special signifi-
cance. For instance, the Kol
Nidre is translated in this vol-
ume in the following abbrevi-
ated form:
All personal vows we are

likely to make, all personal

oaths and pledges we are likely
to make between this Yom
Kippur and the next Yom Kip-
pur, we publicly renounce. Let
them all be relinquished and
abandoned, null and void,
neither firm nor established.
Let our personal vows, pledges
and oaths, be considered
neither vows nor pledges nor

oaths."

Renunciation of ;vows ,.to be
made in the future is explained
in an annotation quoting 'Ne-
darim. There are numerous
changes in translations and
various ,explanations of prayers.
The contents of the Holyday
prayers are made intelligible by
the able editor. The Biblical ref-
erence enables the student to
follow through with research.
Rabbi Birnbaum has produced
a highly commendable work
which enriches our liturgical
library.

May Lift Ban Against Jews

JOHANNESBURG (JTA)—The
ban against membership of Jews
in the Transvaal section of the
Nationalist Party will be lifted
with the forthcoming amalga-
mation of the Nationalist and
Africans Parties.
A reliable Nationalist source
said that this action will be the
"inevitable consequence" of the
merger agreement which will
open membership in the com-
bined party to all sections of
the white population of the
Union.

that for all practical purposes
the Jewish question does not ex-
