Ex-Mufti Stresses 'Two World' Concept
Until Islam Legion's Overrun Globe

By RUTH KARPF

"The Arabs are the most ex-
cellent of all peoples."
"Allah has entrusted us with
the _mission of spreading Islam
over the whole earth—with all
the means at our disposal . .
All the means!"
Those. are the guiding themes
of the Moslem Brotherhood
which claims 600,000 members in
4;500 centers from Egypt to In-
donesia and from Morocco_ to
PakiStan.
Once I saw a frenzied crowd,
roaring assent and reaching for
knives, as a turbaned bearded
Man, with blue eyes and an in-
sinuating smile wound . up his
sermon with the words:
"The desire to conquer the
world that is deep in the breast
of every Moslem comes to you by
inspiration directly froth the
Khoran. Be not afraid to con-
quer. Allah is by your side."
The man was the Mufti of
Jerusalem. The place was a
Mosque in the Old City. And the
time was the height of the 36-39
riots in the Holy Land.
I had seen those kind of fren-
zied gleaming eyes, had heard
this kind a animal roar, had
watched those kind of hands
itching for blood only once be-
fore: That was at the mammoth
Nazi Party Rally in Nuremberg
in 1935, when Hiter had already
taken over power and, in a vast
open-air auditorium, lit up by
brandished torches, told his
minions : "Today Germany, To-
Morrow the world."
Just as Hitler, the Mufti has a
respectable sounding program
for a world that does not take
, the trouble to listen to the real
meaning behind his glib words.
What the Mufti says he wants
is to break down "the artificial
geographic barriers between all
Moslem countries" and join
them in one regional organiza-
tion—to fit into the current
world trend. The Moslem Broth-
erhood, he claims, is the organi-
zation that propagates this idea
now and will put it into action.
What the Mufti tells his fol-
lowers he wants is a gigantic,
powerful Moslem Empire that •
will take up where the Arab Em-
pire of the Middle Ages left off:
spread Islam throughout the
globe and show the "world "the
supremacy of the Arab peoples.
Those are the "master-race"
phrases and the long-range
strategy.
But what is -1;he reality—and
the tactics today?
-I know some of the leaders of
the Moslem Brotherhood. I spoke
to them and discussed their pro-
gram when they weren't yet the
slick politicians that they are
today. When they were still talk-
ing—and revealing what is
really on their minds.
I spoke to Hassan el Bannah,
"The People's Chief Guide," the
Egyptian school teacher who
founded the Moslem Brother-
hood organization. He has since
been assassinated. The - Mufti
saw to that a couple of years
ago. El. Bannah was too popular
for the Mufti's liking. El Ban-
nah was a sincere fanatic who
didn't know how to play the
Mufti's slicker game and who
had a habit of shooting his
mouth off and telling the truth.
El Bannah said this: "We are
against democracy. We believe
in absolute rule by one leader."
That's the way things were in
the days of Mohammed, el Ban-
nah explained—and that is the
way. the Moslem Brotherhood
wants them to be again. The
"leader" is to have complete
power, enforced by his warriors
—the members of the brother-
hood. Like the Mufti, he served
the Axis during the _war. -
El Bannah was full of con
tempt for "the lax, man-made
laws" with which democratic
states protect their citizens. He
considered them weak and in-
effective and suggested instead
a return to the laws of the Khor-
an as interpreted by "the
leader."
An indication of what , this
means is furnished by today's
Saudi Arabia where the Khoran

is the law of the land—and its
interpreter King Ibn Saud. In
this Moslem Brotherhood dream
state, theft, for example is pun-
ished by cutting off the hand
of the accused, and whether the
accusation is a valid one is de-
cided by the tribal chief. Libel
—with conviction operating on
much the same basis and sub-
ject mostly to whose relatives
can produce more sheep for the
chief's herds or more gold for
his coffers—is punished by cut-
ting out the offenders' tongue
in a public square. Slavery—out-
right chattle slavery—is legal
and rampant. These are the ju-
dicial systems which the Mos-
lem Brotherhood wants to see ap-
plied throughout the Middle
East, and when it reaches its
goals, throughout the world.
If that sounds too fantastic to
be plausable in our time and age
---so did most of what Hitler
said.
Education is another- chief
target of the Moslem Brother-
hood. They are against it..
"There can never be equality
between believers and non-be-
lievers," El Bahnah said. "And
there will always be two worlds
—the world of Islam and the
world of war. Until Islam has
triumphed. And the world is

Ours.

Maimon Raps American
Tourists for Slander
Tactics Against Israel

JERU SALEM — (AJP) — A
stinging attack on Jewish visi-
tors from the United States who,
after a brief stay in Israel, re-
turn to America with charges
that everything is wrong in the
Jewish State, • has been made by
Rabbi Judah L. Maimon, Mini-
ster of Religions and world Miz-
rachi leader.
Denouncing such slandering
of Israel "they have spread
throughout the Diaspora," Rabbi
Maimon added, "they have come
to life to undermine and destroy
that which we are building here
with superhuman effort and at
the risk of our lives."
The 75-year-old religious lead-
er, writing in the religious daily,
"Hatzofah," declared that on his
trip to the United States early
this year he "heard a good deal
about this kind of talk and its
effects, even from good friends,
Zionists and staunch members
of the Mizrachi Movement."
He cited -the "numerous Dias-
pora Jews" w h o returned to
their native countries "disap-
pointed in their hopes of doing
good business in Israel, or of
settling here • in anticipation of
finding ready-made fortunes."
Rabbi Maimon included in his
condemnation the few Israelis
who have emigrated from Israel
as well as schlichim (emmis-
saries) who visit the United
States and other countries as
party representatives and issue
partisan reports.
Terming the situation "des-
perate," Rabbi- Maimon said it
was urgent to revive in the
hearts of Jews outside of Israel
"the belief in the sanctity of our
country, in the justness of our
work and in the success of the
state."
