endorsement. Prof. Einstein went
along on the idea. Later, how-
ever, he protested against an
invitation to a Christian church-
man to address a university
function and a conversation with
Dr. A. L. Sachar about heading
the university. As a result, in
order to prevent Dr. Einstein's
withdrawal from the university's
sponsorship, Dr. Goldstein de-
cided to resign his post, which
then went to George Alpert. But
Prof. Einstein himself later re-
signed.

His dispute with Prof. Albert
Einstein which caused his resig-
nation as president of Brandeis
University is described by Dr.
Israel Goldstein in his history of
the new non-
sectarian college
which has just
been published
by Bloch under
the title "Bran-
deis University."

D•. Goldstein .sible the estab-
lishment of the Jewish-sponsored
university, reviews the history
of the idea of a Jewish univer-
sity in America. We learn from
his interestingly docuinented
135-page book that Mordecai
Manual Noah (1785-1851), the
first American Zionist, proposed
the establishment of such a
school and that plans for a Jew-
ish college were made by Rabbi
Isaac. Leeser in 1849.
Short-lived Maimonides Col-
lege and Gratz College are refer-
red to, as well as the existing
Jewish Theological Seminary,
Yeshiva University, Dropsie Col-
lege and Hebrew Union College.
Dr. Goldstein argues in sup-
port of a Jewish university as
being vitally needed on a non-
sectarian basis and not as strict-
ly a rabbinical or secular insti-
tution. He refutes arguments
that have been advanced against
the idea and his book contains
vOluminous . correspondence he
conducted , prior to the estab-
lishment of Brandeis University.
Of special interest is the
period during which he con-
ducted negiotiations to take over

tham, Mass., as well as the battle
he waged successfully against the
elimination of the medical and

Knesset. The President inform-
ed Parliament that because of
illness, he was unable to attend
the opening session, whereupon
the Knesset chose its oldest
member — 74-year-old General
Zionist Hayim Boger—to preside
over the session temporarily un-
til a Speaker was elected.

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
first Parliament to meet on the
soil of an independent Jewish
state in nearly 2,000 years, was
formally dissolved after two
years and seven month8 of ex-
istence. Josef Sprinzak, Speaker
of the Knesset, formally dis-
solved the body in a short
speech, after which the 120
members and spectators in the
gallery joined in singing Hatik-
vah.
Several -hours later, the new
Parliament, whose members
were elected on July 31, held its
opening session and re-elected
Mr. Sprinzak Speaker.- The new
Parliament includes about 45
new members. The opening ses-
•sion was attended by members
of the Israel Cabinet, including
Premier David Ben Gurion.
