New Charge Hurled at Maclver:
4 111outhings Those of a Fr. Coughlin'

A bitter note was injected in
the controversy over the Mac-
Iver Report in the demand by
"Cross-Section U.S.A.," a pri-
vately circulated Jewish news-
letter, that the report of Prof.
Robert M. Maclver of Columbia
University be thrown out.
Charging Prof. Maclver with
"prejudiced views of Jews," Al-
len Lesser, editor and publisher
of "Cross-Section U.S.A.," de-
clared in last week's issue of his
newsletter:
"For their inexcusable blunder
and shocking carelessness in se-
lecting a man with these hostile
sentiments about Jews, NCRAC
and its affiliated agencies owe
the community a most humble

apology."

After referring to the com-
plaints that have been extended
to Prof. Maclver by the agencies
affiliated with • the National
Community Relations Advisory
Council, whose evaluative stud-
ies committee selected the Col-
umbia teacher to analyze Jewish
defense operations, Mr. Lesser
quotes "unimpeachable evidence"
to prove that Prof. Ma,cIver, in
his recent book, used "language
more in • keeping with the
mouthings of a Father Cough-
lin," and that he condemned
Jews for their "exclusiveness"
and their refusal to accept the
"message of Jesus."
Mr. Lesser charges that "with
the fanaticism of a Gerald B.
Winrod (Kansas Fundamental-
ist preacher)", Prof. Maclver
proclaimed: "While Paul preach-
ed the more universal law . .
the Jews pursued that stubborn
principle of exclusiveness ; . .
Never was the nemesis of un-
yielding exclusiveness more com-
plete."
The charges in "Cross-Section
U.S.A." quote Dr. MacIver as as-
serting that Jews were forbid-.
den by "Yahweh" to have any
dealings with "the Gentiles" and
as having stated: "With scarce
a protest, this spirit rules
throughout Jewish history."

12th Street Center
Seeks Instructors

The 12th Street branch of the
Jewish Community Center,
needs volunteer English teachers
for displaced persons classes.
There are an average of eight
people in each class. Some are
men who need to learn English
to get jobs. Women want to
learn English so that they can
get along with their neighbors
and to understand their chil-
dren who are learning English
in school. Most of the displaced
persons have been in this coun-
try for three or fours months.
Classes are two hours in length
in the morning or afternoon.
Call' the 12th Street Center at
TY. 8-6000 to offer your services
to this Red Feather agency.

In the meantime, the Maclver
report has received the approval
of the Boston Jewish Community
Council and, except for the ADL,
national agencies appear to be
inclined to favor endorsing the
study.
Maclver Sticks by NCRAC
In an interview granted to Jo-
seph Brainin and published in
the current issue of Opinion
Magazine, Prof. Maclver express-
ed these views:
That he considers it was un-
ethical for national agency lead-
ers to attack his report before
it was made available to the
public; that he gave due recog-
nition to the ideologies of all
national organizations; in view-
ing whether claims of achieve-
ments by civic protective agen-
cies were validated he learned
that some sectors of the Jewish
population had grown skeptical
of their claims.
He stated that excessive claims
of achievement are being made
by national agencies.
Mr. Brainin, recapitulating his
answers, asserts that the civic
protective agencies "are selfishly
seeking their own separate ad-
vancement, frequently at the
expense of the cause they pre-
sumably are serving." He states
that the civic protective agencies
"exaggerate their achievements
for propagandistic purposes" and
that "the ADL is especially li-
able to this charge." He points
out that drastic changes should
be made in allocating funds and
that the role of the NCRAC
should be made more important.
