Tobin Gives ORT
Accolade for Work

Maurice J. Tobin, United
States Secretary of Labor, fol-
lowing a trip to Israel, made
the following comments, after
visiting the Jerusalem ORT
trade school with the American
Ambassador to Israel, the Amer-
ican Consul in Jerusalem and -
Congressman Augustine B. Kel-
ley, of Pennsylvania:
"I was inter-
ested in ORT
because it dem-
Onstrates in a
very practical
way the con-
structive work
voluntary agen-
cies can do to
further the bas-
ic objectives of
President Tru-
man's Point IV, Sec. Tobin
technical assistance program.
ORT's program of "helping
people to help themselves" is in
striking harmony with Point IV
aid.
"While in Israel, I was im-
pressed by the tempo of econ-
omic activities in all branches
of trade, industry and agricul-
ture. All are aided by funds de-
rived from the United Jewish
Appeal, loans from the Ameri-
can government and private
American investments.
"In viewing the up-to-date
vocational training methods, the
well-planned curricula and ex-
cellent equipment, I felt that
they compare most favorably
with highest American standards.
"The demand for ORT-trained
students is great. While there
are more applicants for admis-
sion to the schools that ORT
can take care of owing to the
shortage of teachers and funds,
I am confident that the- Amer-
ican ORT Federation, under its
able leadership, will find the
funds to expand ORT's activities
in Israel. I shall be glad to give
.what support I can to ORT's
great and constructive work."

Jewish Father Pays
For Pete's Last Trip

NEW YORK, (AJP)—A subur-
ban businessman, whose hopes
to attend his 12-year-old son's
Bar Mitzvah were crushed by
dreaded leukemia, sadly handed
the parents of a little non-Jew-
ish boy the fare for shipment of
their nine-year-old child's body
to Akron, a city he always want-
ed to live in.
Sidney Epstein, of Elmhurst,
set up a memorial fund imme-
diately following the death of
his 12-year-old son, Harold.
When plucky Peter Bena was
stricken with the same disease
that had felled his son, Epstein
was the first who offered to
purchase drugs in order to keep
Peter alive. The child's father, a
$55-a-week factory worker, was
unable to meet the costs.
But this week little Peter was
dead. And once again Epstein
stepped forward to assist the
hard-pressed family.
