Girl Nearing Death
NEW YORK (AJP)—An eight-
year-old Portuguese victim of
dreadful spinal meningitis is re-
ported - holding her own after
treatment with a rare drug
flown from New York by an Is-
rael National Airlines pilot.
The drug, varidase, was sent
in response to a plea from :Eu-

an amateur radio operator, ad-
dressed to "any operator in the
New York area."
The message was picked up by
Fred von Redowsky of Glendale,
Queens, who obtained a supply
from a drugstore nearby and
rushed it to Idlewild Airport
where Capt. M. Tushak was
waiting on a flight to London.
At Londo n, the drug was

plane and taken to the girl who
was treated immediately. The
Queens radio "ham" said that
the girl's father, Ilivio Santos,
was "overwhelmingly grateful"
for the help he had received.
