Our Letter Box
Social Security Aims
Told by Representative
Editor, The Jewish News:
Some very important changes
were made in the Federal old-
age and survivors insurance pro-
gram of the Social Security Act
in 1950. The new program now
covers three out of every four
workers and their families.
The 1950 amendments
strengthened old-age and sur-
vivors benefits three ways: by
covering nearly 10,000,000 more
individuals; by raising benefits
to higher amounts; and by
granting new benefits not pay-
able under the old law.
In order for you or your fam-
ily to receive benefit payments,
you must be "insured" at the
time of your retirement at or
after 65 or at the time of your
death. The length of time you
worked in covered employment
is measured in "quarters of cov-
erage," each year being divided
into four quarters. If you have
10 years or more of covered
work, you are fully insured for
life. ,
Any retired person, not hav-
ing a monthly income of more
than $50, if covered by insurance
benefits, is entitled to benefits
under the Social Security Act.
A divorced wife's or husband's
benefits stop with the death of
their former spouse. A child's
benefit • stops at the age of 18.
The place to file a claim for
benefits is the nearest field
office of the Social Security Ad-
ministration. For any informa-
tion on the actual benefits de-
rived from Social Security, its
retirement and insurance pro-
grams, and its various other
phases, write

Twin Brothers Commit Suicide
LONDON, (JTA) -Twin broth-
ers who were leading members
of the Jewish community of
Hungary, jumped to their deaths
from their Budapest apartment
several hours after an 84-year-
old aunt had committed suicide
by taking poison, the British
press reported. The reason for
the suicides could not be. learned
since the Hungarian police had
confiscated suicide notes.
The brothers, Geza and Josef
Szucs, 56, had served as attor-
neys for the Anglo-Hungarian
Bank. Geza served as Hungar-
ian director of the Joint Distri-
butor]. Committee until recently.
