Truman Favors Lifting
Of Blockade of Suez
WASHINGTON (JTA)—Presi-
dent Truman .stressed the im-
portance of the reopening of the
Suez Canal to Israel-bound ship-
ping, it was reported by Benja-
min Browdy, president of the
Zionist Organization of Amer-
ica, who met with the President
at the White House. Truman
said he was very hopeful that
the anti - Israel b 1 o c.k a d e by
Egypt would be "straightened
out," and that the Canal would
become a freeway for all na-_
tions.
President Truman expressed
regret over the death of Jor-
danian King Abdullah and said
that, unfortunately, the assassi-
nation came at a time when Ab-
dullah figured as a force for
peace in the Near East. Rep.
Abraham Multer, of New York,
who accompanied Browdy, said
the President expressed hope
that the assassination would not
prevent Israel-Arab peace and
that negotiations would shortly
resume.
The President said that he
was drafting a message to the
World Zionist Congress, opening
Aug. 14 in Jerusalem, and that
he would like Browdy to read the
message to the Congress.
Browdy said he plans to leave
for Israel on Aug. 4 and he
promised the President that he
would report to the White House
on his return from Israel. The
President asked Browdy to con-
vey his personal greetings to
Iswel Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion.
