Bernstein Questions
Chicago Forward Story

Answering an American Jew-
ish Press report that was printed
in The Jewish News (July 20,
1951), Joseph Bernstein, man-
ager of the Detroit office of
The Jewish Daily Forward, seri-
ously questioned the validity of
the story, which announced a
10,000 decline in readership as
the motivating factor for the
transfer of the Forward's Chi-
cago office to New York.
Mr. Bernstein ; charges that
"the information comes from a
competitive Jewish newspaper
(the announcement' came from
the office of the rival Jewish
Day), as stated at the outset of
the release."
He also adds, "I would, how-
ever, pass up this unethical
news item as unintentional, but
adding up this incident. to the
editorial you have -published not
long ago regarding the cessa-
tion of the Jewish Morning
Journal, in which you've also in-
jected the Jewish Daily Forward,
and the comment that the Jew-
ish press is declining, which may
or may not be true, that prompt-
ed me to write."

Deadline for 'Journal' Backers Set forAug. 10

NEW YORK, (AJP),— Backers
of the defunct Jewish Morning
Journal were reportedly given
until Aug. 10 by a Federal Court
judge to deposit $140,000 in a
bank or lose the right to re-
publish the idle Yiddish daily.
Supporters of a plan to reopen
the paper, which closed several
months ago in the face or rising
costs and falling revenues, re-
poytedly accumulated a total of
more than $120,000 in the past
four weeks.
In the evenebthe backers find
themselves unable to raise the
money it was likely that Irving
Jacobs, son-in-law of the Jewish
Day's publisher, would be given
approval to dispose of 83 per-
cent of the stock he now holds
in the Journal. Jacobs is an-

xious to sell the, .stoolr, it Was
repoded.
Any such sale '-of stock would
doom plans to reopen the idle
paper.
