When Lawrence W. Crohn ar-
rives in Israel this week, he will ager of a PEC subsidiary, the
be welcomed by his son, David, Mortgage Savings Bank, which
has been helping new settlers
build houses for more than two
decades. He was married here,
to American-born Annette Lash,
originally of Wilmington, Del.,
who came to Palestine with her
family in 1934. Now they and
their baby daughter live in a
pretty three-room flat which
overlooks Tel Aviv port.

years; his daughter-in-law and
granddaughter, Annette and
Ariella, whom he will meet for
the first time. Mrs. Crohn visit-
ed with them in Israel last year.
Israel Speaks, in its last week's
issue, carried the following
cabled story from Tel Aviv
about David, the "Michigan eco-
nomics grad who now helps run
the PEC Mortgage Bank in Is-
rael":
Twenty-nine-year - old David
Crohn of Detroit, was "tapped"
for Israel back in 1947. In that
pre-state year Dr. Walter Eytan,
who is now Director-General of
the Foreign Office, visited the
U.S. and hand - picked a group
of young Americans for a new
public service school which was
about to start in Jerusalem.
David, a University of Michigan
graduate ins economics, was one
of those selected. He gave up
a job in Baltimore and sailed for
Palestine on the S. S. Marine
Carp in May.
It was a fateful journey. The
Marine Carp was detained a t
Bierut by the Lebanese, and be-
cause they were of "military
age," 69 young people, about
half of them Americans, were
taken off and imprisoned for six
weeks. With the help of the
local American consul, they were
allowed to depart and were re-
turned to the U. S.
Back in New York, the de-
tainees, including David, were
transshipped almost immediately
as "supercargo" on one of Israel's
first merchant vessels to sail
from the U. S. They finally
reached their destination in
August.
David Crohn went into the
Army, working with invalid
cases, as he had in Normandy
during World War II. Army serv-
ice helped him learn Hebrew
and prepare for his post-war
jobs—first in the economic sec-
tion of the Foreign Office, there-
after with the Palestine Eco
nomic Corporation investment
company which has sponsored
numerous Israel enterprises.

self "practically a sabra" and
says she doesn't miss "American
luxuries."
David is entirely happy in his
job, because it giVes him an op-
portunity to meet and talk with
American visitors who are po-
tential investors and to prove to
them that doing business in
Israel makes good commercial
sense.
"I like to show them, with
facts and figures," he says, "that
this country can and will make
things pay—and that sharing
responsibility with us today
means also sharing our bright
future tomorrow."
